Busy, large seating areas. Come on the early side for a seat or you'll wait. The food here is great. Started with some jalapeno poppers that were more, well, popper than jalapeno, unfortunately. Ordered the veggie plate lighter portion and it was delicious: green chile, beans, etc. And it was also filling but not stuffing. Your meal also comes with sopapillas, which is awesome. The service here is only okay. Our server acted kind of rushed and annoyed with us. Perhaps she had too many table to serve. Anyway it was a mild bummer.

We were recommended to this place by the front desk at the inn, claiming it won the best green chile of the year--and we were determined to eat green chiles everyday whilst in NM. It was super popular around 3pm in the afternoon! We were there for a late lunch and put our name down on the list. Went up to the bar while waiting to get our first New Mexican margaritas (on the rocks for him, slushie for me), and kept getting eyeballed by these local regulars..not the most comfortable of ambiences in that particular situation. The service at the bar was prompt and the margaritas were tasty. We took our drinks to a cute 2 person short booth and ordered our food. Tomasita's is very friendly and there were lots of families. We got a green chile smothered enchilada and one of the daily specials--can't remember what it was, but it was like a stacked enchilada..not wrapped, smothered in mole instead of chile, if that makes sense?, sopaipillas with honey butter on the side. Conclusion: Food was fine, but there're more authentic places in Santa Fe. I'd steer clear of the Railroad district (shoulda known, but it was the first place we went and were swayed by the innkeeper's strong insistence that they took chile of the year...)

Yum! We were in town for work and came here to get some delicious New Mexican cuisine. The guacamole was AMAZING... the best I've had at a restaurant. I ordered the combination platter and it was very good. I do wish it had been the night for the Carne Adovada special but oh well. I stuffed myself and will definitely be back if I'm in Santa Fe again.

I love this place; been coming for years, and was there last week. The house margaritas are a great way to start while you wait for a table (if you are in a hurry, you can dine at the bar), along with cool refreshing guacamole and chips. I usually have the Mexican plate, which has tasty posole, lots of green chile, beans, and a nice enchilada for a reasonable price. The sopaipillas (with New Mexican honey) are some of the best in town. This is a place for both tourists and locals...but tourists beware that the food is a little more spicy than what you may be used to...which is one reason I love to go there! By the way, for those who complain about the wait....relax, this is Santa Fe.

Unfortunately I had to drop a star...they must've just had their lunch rush when we walked in because the staff seemed burnt out already and the food wasn't as great as I've had before. I orders a steak which I've ordered before and even though I asked for medium rare it was cold in the middle. There was also no seasoning on it...I'm not much of a complainer so I ate everything around the steak. When I brought up the temperature to the waiter he told me that's how I ordered it. I didn't order it to be cold, I've eaten lots of steaks in my time and I know it's still got to be somewhat warm in the middle. I also know that if you want a steak to come out right you have to at least season it with a tiny but of salt and pepper before you out it in the grill...the manager did comp it which I didn't expect since I ate everything else...so that was great, but him telling me they don't season their steak just proved that he was lying because I've had an amazing steak there before. Hit or miss with this place...definitely not consistent.

Edmundo at the bar and Ground Beef Burrito smothered in Red Chili Sauce is the best it gets :)

This place is sub par. Compared to Maria's and New Mexican dishes at Harry's roadhouse. Even compared to every nm restaurant in Albuquerque. We had the blue corn chicken enchiladas and the large combo platter with chile rellenos, cheese enchilada, taco and tamale. Not very good. Guac good. House Margs delicious. I basically had 1 bite of everything and my entire sopapilla with the butter. Will not come back.

Tomasita's has a very nice atmosphere! Had to wait for about 30 minutes but it was definitely worth the wait because the food was very authentic and delicious. Had very good selection of food and drinks! Highly highly recommend stopping here for the food.

The food was okay. We were excited to eat here because a friend had highly recommended. It was fine but it really didn't blow either of us away. We ate a couple other places that were a lot tastier. The atmosphere was nice. Service was average. The best thing I ate was probably the sopapitas.

I have been here 3 times - the first was excellent and I couldn't wait to go back; the second time wasn't quite as good and after the third visit I said I wouldn't go back ever. This is a pretty popular Santa Fe "tourist" place and so gets very busy and parking can be an issue. As it is in Santa Fe they will charge you for chips and salsa - they have blue corn chips and their salsa has been both great & spicy to pretty much just tomato flavored. Their red and green are both good. Their prices are a coupla/three bucks more than you might pay outside of Santa Fe, but the service is very quick and the ambiance of the old railway building is pretty cool. The first time we went there they were very accommodating in letting us eat cupcakes we had brought with us for a family birthday as dessert. Their house margarita is decent and if you get a pitcher it can serve 3 or 4 thirsty folks. My last visit is where the food just wasn't spicy enough, for me, and given the extra few bucks it costs I will probably just hold off on my NM fix until I am back home and can get to Sadie's.

The flan is amazing! We had the Tuesday special and it was wonderful authentic food. My cousin had the margarita and said it was one of the best ever.

This review is limited to their cheese enchiladas, the guacamole and their frozen margaritas because that is what I always order. When ordering the cheese enchiladas I specify that I would like them served with blue corn tortillas (as opposed to the regular corn tortillas). The order comes with plentiful chile sauce over flat tortillas and melted cheese, pinto beans and a little garnish. The red chile is moderately picante (to uninitiated it might be too "hot") and is florid and great to the taste. The green chile, also moderately picante, is full flavored and very fresh tasting. The servings are more than ample. Perhaps the best enchiladas in Santa Fe but that is always open to taste and debate. The guacamole appetizer is nicely spiced with garlic and other flavorings. It never disappoints. The frozen margaritas are a perfect blend of lime and sweetness...truly tasty. Highly recommended.

Tomasitas has really stepped up their game. The last time I went the tamales were... Less than par. Friday night they were awesome. So moist and lots of meat. I got the vegetarian red chile on top with some cheese and it was great. Also we had the famous margaritas and my aunt got the roast beef burrito. Our server was not very personable and checked on us rarely. But overall I was pretty happy with the experience.

  • Lilo And P.

Ahhh full of tourists! We had to wait 1 hour before being seated (5 of us). It's really 'normal' new mexican food. nothing too special, and probably not worth the wait. there are other places you can go with more service (the waitstaff were good, but there were just too many people for the number of waitstaff to manage). we had a pitcher of margaritas, and they were heavy on alcohol (yay, good value?!?) and the flavor was alright, but not life changing. Trust me, I love NMcan food, but this was just not the best. Go somewhere where there is a nicer atmosphere or something!

A huge tourist destination because of location and consistency. Not bad but not amazing. Very pleasant on the patio, a little too diner-y on the inside for my preference, but we eat there when we just don't feel like cooking and want zero pretension. Trust me, there's no pretense here. Gets the general idea of New Mexican food across, but doesn't feel truly authentic to me.

    (3)
  • Andrew M.

So disappointed. We waited 20 minutes for a table and the place was jammed. The service was quick, but the food was inattentively prepared and uninteresting. It looked like it had been thrown together quickly. There is certainly better local cuisine now at a lot of other places.

    (2)
  • Jane D.

Waiting for 30 minutes for expensive, bland mexican food is something I can do anywhere. The only good thing about this place was the guacamole.

  • Jen K.

A locals favorite, and always packed to the gils, their margaritas are excellent. Yet I was surprised at how ordinary the food seemed, after learning of their popularity. Feels in someways like a cafeteria. I recall ordering a beef burrito here, years ago, and getting a giant hunk of beef on a warm white flour tortilla doused in green chile. Sort of tastes like the Conquistadors came with limited supplies, kidded cows, processed chile and boom, quick meal with out a lot of thought, or spices. I do not go out of my way to eat here. Have gone & enjoyed it since. Better to order something safe like guacamole & chips or a quesadilla. This is the last place on earth I would order an iceberg lettuce salad! Oh, yes, always a long wait for a table.

  • Kris D.

Tomasita's is a tradition. I just have to get the burrito grande with the green chili when I come in to Santa Fe. I know, I know . . . a lot of people think it's touristy (there are always plenty of locals the times I've been there) or that other places have better chili . . . that's a matter of preference. It's true that every time I go to Santa Fe and visit (not very often), the building seems to get bigger and bigger, but that's what happens when everyone likes a place. I did prefer the smaller, more intimate setting, but I really just want a table. :) I was a little disappointed with the sopaipillas this time. I'm used to tearing off a corner, pouring in the honey and squishing it all around, but this time the top side was very thin and flaky. Too thin for the honey smashing, but still very delectable.

I was really surprised to see the negative reviews here. I thought the food was great and the service was friendly! We went twice during our week-long trip we enjoyed it so much. The red and green chile sauces are really good and so is the flan. I will say that I am from Upstate NY, and we are definitely lacking in authentic Mexican restaurants (although there are a few), so maybe I don't have such a picky taste for Mexican food, but all the food here was awesome. The waiters were so nice too, very friendly service. Two thumbs up for Tomasita's!

Pretty good chile; good tortilla soup; good chips; my dad loved the green chile. Loved the sopapillas. Staff pretty friendly. Very charming decor

Great value for traditional NM food. Go early or late as it gets really busy at peak meal hours - the locals know a good thing.

Apparently the subject of Tomasita's is quite controversial. Friendly conversations have nearly come to fisticuffs at dinner parties regarding their authenticity, longevity and the hotness of their chill. To me this level of passion for and against shows that they're doing something right. That and the hour-long waits you can expect to find around dinner nearly every night. I'm going on the record as being a huge fan. And I think it isn't simply the food, but the memories that I've built with family and friends at this restaurant. The wait staff has always been friendly and the sopapillas. Oh, the sopapillas. Pillowy, fluffy, chewy and slathered in honey butter. My only recommendation would be to bring them at the end because I like to have them after my meal for a sweet treat and I would love to have them hot out of the oil. Oh, and the price is right.

Busy place. Excellent food. Staff semi friendly. Water was short and abrupt. Recommend to any out of Towners.

  • Brian B.

Really good food here. Hard to go wrong in Santa Fe when looking for what they call New Mexican. The sopaipillas are light and puffy so you drench them with honey. The enchiladas came with pasole and beans all smothered in green chili. Everything tasted great. I would go here again if I had the chance.

On a referral we went to Tomasitas for dinner while in Santa Fe. The service from our waiter was very good. The Swirl drink which came highly recommended lived up to the high expectation set. Unfortunately our entres did not meet the expectation set by the referrers comments nor the excellent service. We had combination platters, my spouse had the combination and I had the super combination as it came with both red and green chiles. The chile itself was very good, quite spicy and flavorful. The food it covered was okay, a solid good but not great. If I was providing a review based off of food plus service, the outstanding waiter would pull this up to three stars.

  • Dawn H.

Went on the suggestion of a friend. It was alright. The food was good and the service was good. We had to weight about 45 minutes to be seated on a Monday night, so the place is busy. The green chili was the best part of my meal. I recommend getting that with what ever you order. If I go back to Santa Fe, I am not sure this one will be on my repeat list. I am more likely to go back to one of the smaller restaurants in the area like Bobcat Bite.

Great place. We went on a Friday night and it was very crowded, but we still only waited about 15 minutes for an outdoor table. It's a giant restaurant. The ingredients in everything were pretty top-notch- good cheese, great green chile, really unbelievable beans and sopapillas. I'm still looking for that flavor. The margaritas were good but a little light on the tequila.

We visited Tomasita's twice during our visit to Santa Fe. It's located in an old train depot and provides plenty of free close parking (unlike many places in/near downtown Santa Fe). You can also catch the Rail Runner here! Both times we visited, we hardly had to wait at all. We were seated once in the main dining room and once in the "Randy Travis" room, complete with photo of Randy himself. What this has to do with Mexican/New Mexican food, I have no idea. Somebody must just be a big fan of his. The food was your basic delicious Mexican-type food, along with green or red chiles, making it "New Mexican." Best of all, though, are the sopapillas that come with a lot of the dishes. They are fresh, puffy, and oh-so-tasty with the honey/sweet butter that Tomasita's offers with it. It's like free dessert with your meal. During our first visit to Tomasita's, I tried the Tamale Blue Plate Special, which included a tamale with red chile, a blue corn cheese enchilada with green chile, beef taco, Spanish rice, and refried beans. It was a nice combination of both chiles and Mexican food. The red was definitely MUCH spicier than the green, but since I love spicy foods, I loved every bite. The second visit, I went with the Blue Corn Chicken Enchiladas, which had the same sides. One of my friends ordered the shrimp quesadilla both visits because she loved it so much. It was an open face quesadilla (no top), lettuce, tomato, and had a lot of large pieces of shrimp on it. It was basically a large cheesy shrimp salad on top of a tortilla. We had two enjoyable (and reasonably priced) dining experiences at Tomasita's and recommend it to travelers.

Walked in not sure what to expect ordered something tame as I'm not in to spicy. Had the most wonderful Chalupa's and Heavenly Indian Bread Pillows with honey butter. Lord Have Mercy I have had my favorite meal thus far on this trip.

  • Christine P.

I had the chicken and green chili burrito. It was good but not great. The service was excellent, the food is spicy and the waiter kept my ice tea full which is a huge plus. The green chili is great but the chicken had no seasoning and the plates don't come with any rice, beans, etc. The sopapillas are great and there is honey right on the table. Overall very good but not the best New Mexican food in Santa Fe. Atmosphere is great, the wait seems to be about 20 minutes all the time. I would go again, but not my first choice. Maybe other things on the menu are better, I will try something different next time.

This place gets some solid reviews. A lot of three and four stars. I think three stars is pushing it a bit. The food is ok. I ordered the cheese enchilada plate with red and green sauce. There is so much sauce it was hard to find the actual enchiladas. The red sauce is good and has a nice spice to it. I do not like the green sauce. It tastes ok, but it is overpowering with all the chunks of green chilis in it. In the future I would order just the red sauce. That helps but does not solve the issue of a tiny portion of enchilada. The rice is good. Tender and tasty. The soapapillas are solid. Pretty good with a nice dose of honey.

Fun place with super hot red chile sauce! What I liked - Food and especially the red chile sauce - Great service and I greatly appreciate the special attention to the needs of my 3 year old - Chips & guacamole - Yum! - Drinks - Strong - the way I like them The only complaint I would have is the super aggressive guard that they have for their parking lot. Tomasitos shares their parking lot with the Santa Fe Southern Railway. The Railway has about 4 parking spots in a huge parking lot that are intended for dropping off people. This rent-a-cop's basic concern was to as rudely as possible figure out whether you were here for Tomasitos or the railway by screaming at you as you exit your car. - A smart person would just watch where the customers go. If they walk towards the restaurant, that's pretty good "tell" that they are here for the restaurant. No need to do anything. - An even smarter person would try to sell them the virtues of the restaurant if they were walking towards the Railway and politely tell them that parking lot is only for the restaurant. Then again, if he were smart, he probably would have a better job.

Whoa. I didn't even know I was in a Mexican food deficit until I came here. Me and my food had a relationship. Bottom line: the service kind of sucks but the food is kickass This is something you can only get away with when your food is stellar. And it was. Incredible strawberry margaritas, VEGETARIAN tamales (thank the lord!), and spicy but super flavorful chili. As an extra awesome piece you get sopapillas with honey butter. So put your patience pants on (we called ahead to hear that there was no wait to arrive and wait 20 and the waiter was MIA) and get here and stuff your face.

My family has been coming here since they first moved to Santa Fe over 40 years ago. While they are also big fans of La Choza and The Pantry, Tomasita's is a must have in our family. Seriously, there are pictures of me as a baby eating there. The food is fantastic but the service has gone down a bit since Georgia sold the place several years ago. I've never had their margaritas so I can't speak to those but the chile (red or green) will make your nose run and the sopas are little pillows of heaven. The back room is my favorite to eat in as it's more private and less loud. This place is right next to the Rail Runner station so if you want to eat there, best get in before the train comes! Yes, there is always a wait and the place can be loud, but it's good food and to me, worth it. I've never understood not eating somewhere because of lots of tourists. If the food is good, who the hell cares?

I am so sad. Never had a problem with going to Tomasitas because it was always so good. I've been going there for years. Last two times however, I ordered my favorite 'Wednesday's special'. This is GBE blue corn green Chile chicken enchilada. Both times the taste was off, and I believe the chicken was old. You get the taste from leaving chicken to long in the refrigerator after preparation. Now I faced with the dilemma of not going there for a while, or finding a new favorite there that doesn't have chicken.

Tried this place because it was walking distance from my hotel. The food was really good, server was friendly. Food came out really fast. Would definitely return. Loved the sopapillas that came with the meal too

    (5)
  • Ron D.

Our last meal there was truly awful. We have eaten there for. 25 years and this was the worst. The blue corn chicken enchiladas were tasteless; the green chili was flavorless and like from a cheap institutional canned product. The refried beans were dried out and also tasteless. This venerable eatery needs to check its kitchen QC and return to its previous quality. So sad.

Ugh Lord, my first dinner in Santa Fe and my first time in Santa Fe. Tomasitas is the Applebee's of Santa Fe. This could not be more un-authentic (if that's even a word). I ordered the enchiladas plate with green chile. I had about two bites and wondered how long it was on the grill for. Even the chile was curdling, if that was even possible. The margaritas was good and the service was good, but the food tasted like it had been sitting on a burner for a few days...maybe just sitting in the Santa Fe sun all day. My boyfriend had a burrito and it was nasty as well. Blahhhh not a great first experience in Santa Fe.

    (1)
  • Jacob K.

I liked this place a lot the first time I went, but not as much the second time. I think this place is famous or something, but you can find higher quality food in downtown Santa Fe for a similar price. The one great thing about this place is the Sopaipillas (probably spelled that wrong). So if you do go here get the stuffed sopapillas. Service was fine.

  • sarah b.

Chili's crushes Tomasitas in a faceoff, hands-down. So many people recommended this place I was reluctant to get sucked in to a tourist trap. Which is exactly what it is. Churn and burn, rushed service. The margaritas are made from MIX. The guac is very good but obviously prepared in advance and served on a soggy tortilla bowl. My entree was the veggie combo and frankly didn't taste that good, my husband didn't like his entree either. I ordered my child a quesedilla with rice and got french fries instead. Her true order arrived unappologetically and very late. If you're like us and you feel compelled to go, get the soprapillas, they are quite delish with local spicy honey and butter. Down it with a tequila shot and run. If you must stay. Have a few more shots and you might appreciate your food more than us.

    (2)
  • Danielle C.

Ordered the Tuesday deluxe platter as well as the stuffed sopapillas. My mom felt they were the best chile rellenos she had ever had (as part of the deluxe). I recommend getting the chile sauces on the side if you've never had them or at least sampling. Wouldn't want it to ruin your meal for being too spicy. The green chile is pretty tasty. Large portions are very filling and the liters of margaritas are fun. But they bring out tiny margarita glasses that are questionable. Good drinks and food though. Best to go on a weekday when it's not too busy.

Went on a Saturday and the wait was pretty long, about an hour before I was seated ( 3 of us) The restaurant was very crowded getting to the bar was a mission. Once we were seated the service was ok like I said before the restaurant was packed seemed hard to get the waiters attention once we were seated. The food was good had guacamole as an appetizer and Carne Adovada as my entree ( it was verrryyyy spicy ). Overall not too bad. It's a big tourist attraction so it's a place you should visit while in Santa Fe.

  • T I.

We love this place! Yes, we are tourists but we travel to Santa Fe every other month and have eaten at many, many other restaurants in the area. We always return to Tomasita's for it's consistently good food, friendly staff, and excellent margarita's.

  • Rennie C.

As a local, this place is just too touristy for me. When you see tourists lined up outside at 10:45 a.m., you know you're in the wrong place. Thing is---the food is pretty ok. Not my favorite, but ok. Margaritas don't hold a candle to Maria's, but, again----pretty ok. I've had bad service here several times, and, once the waiter kind of scolded me for saying, jokingly, "We thought you'd forgotten us." He said, "Can't you see I have the whole patio full of customers?" I wanted to tell him to f off, but, then again, you never know what will show up in your enchiladas when you piss off the waiter. It's not our first or second or third choice for NM-Mex, especially with the service issues and the over-abundance of tourists. However, when I find myself waiting at the Railrunner Depot for the return of my beloved, I do confess I'll pass the time in the bar and throw back a marg or two.

Great dinner, always a favorite spot when with friends and family. I always seem to get the same Tuesday special no matter what. I have tried everything on the menu also and it is a very good place to eat, relax, and just have a nice time.

Amazing stuffed sopapillas. I hadn't been to Tomasita's in years until last week. I had almost forgot how good it was. Both the red and green chilies are outstanding.

This is one of those large and good-but-not-outstanding Mexican places. We had a meal which was in every way satisfactory, but which was not special -- I'd hoped for more in Santa Fe, but that was probably unreasonable in a large restaurant. Still, I'd happily eat there again.

Stop #4 on the 10 hour/9 restaurant eat your way through New Mexico extravaganza. As many people have already mentioned, Tomasita's is an institution. That being said, I really didn't think the food was anything special. Don't get me wrong, I didn't dislike it. It was just sort of average. If El Torito and El Chollo had a child raised in New Mexico, it would be Tomasitas. We got there about 12 noon on a Monday and the wait was 30-45 minutes. The place was packed with tourists and local business people. There is a sign by the hostess stand warning patrons about "too hot chili" and recommending either chili-free food or getting the chili on the side. This sign is common in the tourist area restaurants. Once seated it was clear that the restaurant is really loud and really crowded. Any place they can squeeze a table of patrons they have. I ordered a house margarita ($6) which was small and ordinary. For lunch I ordered the Monday Lunch special which was the Blue Plate Tamale ($10.95.) The lunch included: 1 beef tamale with red chili - the masa was kind of dry and the chili was ordinary. 1 blue corn cheese enchilada with green chili - the enchilada was sort of formless and lost in the unremarkable chili and the cheese was gummy. 1 hard shell beef taco - think taco bell rice - mushy refried beans - looked and tasted canned Sopaipilla - good and served with New Mexico honey which was dark and smokey. Tomasitas is good but not great.

This place is NOT a secret- we got here at 4:30 on Friday for dinner and they already had a wait. But, it's well worth it... get in here and you will eat an excellent meal! I had the Christmas Enchilada platter with vegetarian sauces, which is one side red sauce and one side green sauce - the red was roasted and the green had a surprisingly rich depth for not having any pork or meats. Nicely done! Normally veg. versions of Mex food are a poor substitute but I felt like I had as great of a meal as my husband did. For drinks I had a FROG, which was...some marg...well I don't remember but it warmed me right up and made me chatty. Hubby had a combo platter and a top shelf marg, which was served in a nice carafe. Baby had kids size cheese enchilada with mild green chili sauce- she LOVED it and the tomatoes that came on the top- Service was great, the backwaiters were attentive, everyone was friendly and we didn't wait long for the food. Dinner for three of us with two drinks was $58 after 20% tip- nice meal, worth the wait- this is a nice local find, we will be back soon. BONUS that someone local said it's owned by some Greeks, we forgot to drop the Greek card on our visit but will have to investigate that as it's pretty unusual to have a Greek family owning a Mex restaurant- OPA!

Simply the best! If I cant eat my moms New Mexican food, this is where I go. Blue corn chicken enchilada with green and red chile with sopapillas. If you go to one Restaraunt in Santa Fe, go here!

I guess I am a little confused as to what all the fuss is about?? The food was good-not great, and the margaritas were tasty, but not over-the-top. They DO have AWESOME guacamole. Our server was very nice, but very slow, and all of the other servers standing around did not seem very interested in helping him out. You should give it a shot, just don't set the bar too high...

This really should be a 2.5 star rating. The entire experience at Tomasita's was OK, but not great. The key word here is, "BUT." (see examples below) We had a hankering for red chili while in NM and Tomasita's was highly recommend by some locals. We arrived towards the end of the lunch rush. - Ambiance: historic, BUT felt a bit dark & gloomy in and around the bar areas - Service: the staff was pleasant, BUT not really friendly. Most of them seemed young, inexperienced, and unenthusiastic (like they were just going thru the motions.) They were initially helpful with drinks, BUT seemed to forget about us toward the end of the meal. - Food: * Chips & Salas - extra cost, which was fine, BUT they were nothing special. * Guacamole - looked good, BUT it was quite bland and flavorless. * Flat Chicken Enchilada - large portion, BUT it was pretty basic. * Beans & Rice - good, BUT not great. * Sopapilla - hot, BUT a bit soggy. * Green Chili - it was ok, BUT was just that, chopped green chili & fairly mild. * Red Chili - it had some heat, BUT was gritty (undercooked) and unremarkable. Let's put the food this way... We discussed about taking the leftovers home, BUT opted not to. - Departure: Lots of staff, BUT not a single one acknowledged us as we were leaving (they were standing around chatting with each other instead.) With so many other great restaurants in Santa Fe, I think Tomasita's should really step it up. We would like to return, BUT have no great desire to do so after this experience. PS - the best of our visit was chatting with a local women who was camped-out in the lobby selling her grandmother's beautiful handmade scarves (yes, they really looked handcrafted.) She was super friendly (unlike the rest of the staff) and she even took credit cards.

Update! Yet another group of friends wanted to go eat at Tomasita's, so I was obliged to give them another chance. I ordered the Rellenos with a Silver Coin margarita. (Contrary to what I said in the earlier review, they apparently are not made from a mix.) They were amazing. The rellenos are, like most that I've had in New Mexico, made with "local" chiles, and not Poblanos. They were some of the best I've had. And the margarita not only did not make sick, but was pretty darn good. You are redeemed, Tomasita's.

This is my favorite Mexican food in Santa Fe! My dad disagrees & says the Shed, which is also a SF classic. But the fresh guacamole & the sopapillas (plain or with honey) are delicious!! The location gets you away from teh square & close to the Farmer's Market, check it out too!

Had the Blue corn chicken enchilada. It was very good. The soppapilla's were huge and wonderful.

Okay food. Chips and salsa were a nice touch, and the sopapillas are great.

I have heard from people "in the know" that there are better New Mexican cuisine places in the area. Sadly, I did not have time to judge for myself -- we only had a night to spend in Santa Fe. For an introduction to New Mexico's amazing cuisine style, though, I could not ask for better. Their plate specials, which offer a mix of green and red on different offerings (sopapilla or chile relleno), were a great deal and a perfect way to get to know this wonderful region's food. Can't wait to come back and try more!

Over-rated, crowded, and pretentious. When my friends come to Santa Fe, some insist on going to this place because of it's reputation of being "the spot" for authentic New Mexican food. But I don't know very many locals who ever eat here, including me. The food is OK, not bad I guess. It's largely formula food cranked out of a kitchen that is all about getting as many people as possible in and out of the restaurant each night. And it's no bargain, either.

Try Tomasita's for dinner. Love the Carne adovada stuffed sopaipilla! Green Chile can be HOT! Great Margaritas!

Loved it! The prices were reasonable, place was bustling with people both local and tourists. Bethany, ( I think?) the waitress was helpful and prompt. The sopapillas and the margaritas were the best!!!!!!! Had a great time, this place has a great vibe. next trip to NM will be with family from the west coast, and I know they will love it here!

Was told multiple times this was were to go to experience Green Chile and New Mexican food, but was disappointed. Saw some flashes of brilliance--sopapillas and salsas--but seems the quality of the food is slipping. Green Chile Steak--The Saturday--was a mess. Was more like a bland stew with tough steak and hardly any Green Chile flavor. The Tuesday, Chile Rellenos and Chicken Enchilada, was better. Chile was very good, but the enchilada while flavored well, had dry chicken was dry and the tortila was very tough. Service was poor. Waitress just seemed to disappear, it even took the manager a while to find her.

The wait for lunch was a long but the food was well worth it! They serve daily specials of which Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are available everyday. For starters we had green chile fries and blue corn chips w salsa for starters. They were bomb! For lunch, chile relleno, blue corn enchilada with a side of rice and beans. Absolutely loved this place and highly recommend it!

this is my 3rd time here, and each time i visit santa fe I MUST GO TO tomasita's... 1stly- You get sopaipillas with the meal, but order a few extra. I seriously cried, tears of joy with these pillows of delicious sweet bready goodness... if i could i would order these and only these, but i dont want to get stared at. 2ndly- its a great place there is always a wait, but whats that saying "patience makes the heart grow fonder" ? something to that effect, you can sit in their generous sitting area, read a menu and start watering at the mouth. each day has its own special, and we came on monday, which has a sampler-esq platter with red chile tamale, blue corn enchilada with green chile, hard beef taco, and rice and beans. i really wanted friday which was pork abadova (sp?) nice friendly staff, very loud since they are always busy but you dont seem to notice since you are either having a good time yourself or your too busy wiping sopaipilla tears from your eyes to care

Always consistent New Mexican food. The red chile is better than the green. And sopas always light and perfect.

We went early enough one night to avoid a long wait. I was underwhelmed. The restaurant seemed dirty to me. Our server wasn't around much. After having eaten my weight in food over a week's time, I just ordered 1 tamale with red chile sauce. It was good. My friend got the cheese enchilada with green chile, which I tried and found tasty, too. I think that the food was decent, but for the price and the hassle of the wait, I would probably go somewhere else.

Typical Southwest Tex-Mex restaurant. Don't be fooled by all the advertisement on the city maps. Ordered a margarita which was good but about a thimble full! I have seen much better. Would recommend it but I would like stick my neck out in the recommendation.

I'll start by saying I grew up on Mexican food from San Diego, CA. Second- Don't even waste your time. I've lived in Santa Fe for a year now and everyone here thinks it's the best, I don't know why maybe they have never had anything else... I've been here twice to give it the benefit of the doubt. So here is what I've seen/eaten. Chips and Salsa- "Blue Corn" round Tostitos with OK Salsa, have to pay for them too! Jalapeno Poppers- Not bad but it's Chedder with chopped Jalapeno's, probably in the frozen food section. Blue Corn Enchilada- A flat 6in blue corn tortilla with cubed white boiled chicken(could have been from can) then another tortilla on top with cheese then broiled to melt cheese and drowned with red or green chili. The beans and rice also have no flavor... The margarita was OK but for the price I could have received a better meal at a creepy Street vendor The family I had visiting me on my second visit said that Mac & Cheese from the Blue Box was better than Tomasita's. They also said the red&green chili was better tasting at a breakfast chain the next morning.

My wife and I are from Albuquerque and Taos respectively. We now live in Colorado and crave authentic native New Mexican food. If you're looking for coastal Mexican, or Tex-Mex, or Southwest Gourmet, this is not the right place. If you want traditional New Mexican, this is one of the three best restaurants in New Mexico that we have found. They have the best green chile in the world. It's composed of around 40% diced greeen chiles from Hatch. Incredible red as well. We buy them by the quart and take it home. The prices are probably 10-15% too high, but it's absolutely worth it.

The red chile is great. The pillowy sopaipillas with butter and honey are deadly good. I had the combination plate and was thrilled with the rice, beans and enchilada. Good solid New Mexican food.

We wanted to eat authentic mexican food. Everyone was raving about Tomasita's. We decided to give it a try in the middle of the week. There was a 45 min wait on a Wednesday! When we finally did get a table, we ordered some chilli rellenos, some daily specials, and a couple of appetizers. The food was amazing. Will definitely go back when I am back in Santa Fe.

Tomasita's has the best frozen margaritas in Santa Fe. The chicken burrito is excellent. Love the green chili.

This is the first time I've been here, but my my, it is literally like the best place to eat Mexican food. They have live bands playing and they serve you well. I ordered their Tuesday Special and that is my favorite even though it's the only thing I've tried. They also give you fresh sopaipillas with your food and it is the best as well. Nothing beats Tomasitas' food. It's the best and I think everybody should give the food a try.

The first time I ate at Tomasita's it was in a tiny building on Hickox Street in the barrio: there was always a line, and it was worth the wait. I would come here to get the green chile which you can get in NM and no where else: Chimayo peppers that sometimes can cure a cold, or at least cauterize your mouth. Then the owner had the prescience to buy the derelict Santa Fe railroad depot on Guadalupe Street that no one else wanted; this would have been ca. 1981. Now an entire tourist Mecca has arisen in the area which at one time was deserted and outside the tourist orbit of the Plaza and Canyon Road. It cracks me up to read the reviews that call Tomasita's a tourist trap: this is the real deal from the barrio, just like it was ~35 years ago. If you don't like Tomasita's, you don't like NM food. The chile is good and hot, the margaritas are strong, and it's not even expensive. Tomasita's is one place that I really miss from Santa Fe before it became the easternmost suburb of Los Angeles.

  • Mark N.

Kind of a tourist trap. I think there is much better New Mexican food a lot of other places in northern New Mexico.. The bar area is kind of cool to hang out in simply because this place is so popular so there are always people there.. But the food is in my opinion so-so. And this place is kind of expensive and often has a huge wait for a table.. Head down Cerrillos to Cafe Castro, cheaper and better..

Worst food in Santa Fe. No seasoning. Not Mexican it's New Mexican. Watered down Margaritas.

    (1)
  • Kerry M.

First, this is a definite tourist trap!!!!! The food was really good, but it was the Disneyland of New Mexican food. The food at Atrisco's is better, there isn't near as long of a wait, and the parking is much better. :)

Great atmosphere, very nice staff, and AMAZING Red chile. Yes the wait was ~45 minutes on a saturday afternoon, but that speaks to something. We spent our time waiting sipping on some very tasty margs while interacting with people from all over the US at the bar. I went for the red chile chicken enchiladas and was very impressed. I even had the option to put on an over easy egg on top, just like i do when I make them homemade. The red chile was some of the best I have ever had. This combo is highly recommended. I even bought a pint to go so I can pour it over some breakfasts at home.

This place is a gem. Excellent tamales and red chili. The service was fast and friendly and everything was reasonably priced.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. Yes, their chile is hotter than you will find at typical Mexican restaurants. They have a sign warning patrons about this. But, as I've said in past reviews, hotter does not necessarily mean better. I do like a lot of heat, but, given a choice between flavor and heat (if I can't have both), I would choose flavor. Unfortunately, Tomasita's was lacking in this department. I had the Mexican plate, which consists of a "rolled" chicken or beef enchilada (as opposed to a flat enchilada, a fairly common phenomenon in these parts) in red chile sauce, pinto beans, posole, and some green chile sauce. The pinto beans were good. I chose chicken for my enchilada. The chicken was tender white meat--so this was good too. The sauces however--both red and green--were a bit bland in the flavor department despite having the requisite heat. My husband ordered veggie tamales with green chile sauce, and these too were on the bland side. The best part of the meal were the homemade sopapillas, which are served with butter and local honey. These were outstanding. Service, portions, and price were all decent. However, with so many fabulous flavors to choose from in Santa Fe, I would probably explore elsewhere before returning.

  • Kirke G.

Nice staff. Food was to my taste cheese heavy and a bit bland, perhaps new Mexican is by definition a bit cheesy for my taste, but as a first local meal and jet lag palliative it felt fine.

  • Jonathan L.

This place is an institution in santa fe, so I was particularly dissapointed that the food was mediocre. I had a chicken stuffed so papilla with green chile. Honestly, it was pretty bland. There are a lot of places in town that have better food for lower prices and shorter waits.

Tomacita's was highly recommended by friends of friends and from the number of cars in the parking lot, lots of people had the same recommendation. I always look for locals and it is readily apparent that locals are willing to elbow through the tourists to gain entry, because the FOOD AND SERVICE are excellent. I love Northern New Mexico Cuisine and you can get your fill here. Sopapillas with honey, oooooooh. Their red sauce is fantastic. We sat in the patio (about 6:30 pm) and it was lovely. Flan for dessert was exactly as it should be prepped and served and was devoured in nothing flat. I'm ready to go back.

Definitely my favorite restaurant in Santa Fe! The last time we ate there, we literally had our fresh, piping hot food served to us within 2 minutes of ordering. I grew up in NM and moved out of state, and this place is always on my list for places I have to eat when I come home. Their red chile isn't just hot, but has awesome flavor as well. The only downside is how crazy busy it gets there....but that's just because it's so darn gooooooood :)

  • Mitch G.

Santa Fe is cool anyway, but to have a restaurant with a menu item called the "Randy Travis" is pushing the coolness factor beyond the limit. Located right near the train station and with lines of patrons echoing the length of the old Atchison-Topeka-Santa Fe, this big Mexican cuisine house is clearly a favorite meeting place of those lucky enough to call Santa Fe home. These folks keep it real, warning newcomers to be prepared for the authentic heat of their chili sauces, salsas, and purees. They will not compromise. So have it on the side if you're "mild -mannered". But if you're more feisty, and like to "hollah" and see tears come to your eyes as you enjoy your freshly prepared fare, then you will certainly feel at home here. Be prepared to wait. While waiting, enjoy a Santa Fe brew, or have some of their margaritas... OR... people watch. That's what I did. And there were politicians, preachers," ladies that lunch", slackers like me, and the sensational snobs staring and snarling secretly at sub-cultures sharing their space!

There is just nothing else like eating in Santa Fe. Tomasita's will ALWAYS be in my top 5 and my go to place for authentic New Mexican and the "swirl." No one else has the swirl, it's sangria and frozen margarita swirled together it packs such a punch you can only have two. I had the ground beef chalupas with a side of green, and my bf had the Monday special, blue corn tamale plate. He inhaled it before I even finished a chalupa so I'm assuming it was good. Love this place always will just because!!!

YUM! Another place my boyfriend likes to go. They make some good margeritas and a mean stuffed sopapilla! I'm not a fan of their salsa but that's just a preference. Besides the great food and service the atmosphere is really nice. A lot of happy cheery people. I enjoy this place a lot and love coming here. Everytime I've come here I've throughly enjoyed everything about it.

Totally overrated! Nothing I can't make at home. They don't even have carne asada or some other awesome beef!! They have roast beef? lame. One thing is completely unforgivable for new mexico; i was not given any beans or rice!!! I didn't even order from the ala carte menu!!!! Total fraud!!!

I stopped in to Tomasita's with a friend "late nite" (read 9:30 pm in Santa Fe) for a quick drink and a bite to eat before my train to Albuquerque. The service was quick and the food was good. We ordered margaritas, which unfortunately were some of the weakest drinks I'd had during my entire Santa Fe experience. The bartenders didn't really have much to say and there was a crowd around the bar, so I suppose we should have just been thankful that we got seats. The guacamole was amazing, although the tortilla bowl it was housed in had gone stale. The salsa was an amazing spicy concoction and my main wish was for more chips. I'm not sure I would return to Tomasita's for any reason accept for pre or post late night travel.

  • Karen S.

I'm not from Santa Fe, so am probably not qualified to judge the details of which chili is better or how (in)authentic the food is. Having said that Tomasita's hit the spot for a late afternoon lunch (given that there are so many places that close between 2-5, our options were limited anyway). Decent margaritas, and good guacamole. I had the taco platter that was nothing super special, but it was tasty. The sopapillas were fantastic. Our service was a little off. She was nice enough, but not super helpful with menu options (Tablemate: "Which chili is hotter?" Server: They're the same.) This was especially evident when we overheard another table's server clearly explain menu options and tell folks that green was hotter that day. We also noticed the "Randy Travis Pork Chops" on the menu, along with a wall full of Randy Travis photos and news articles. When we asked our waitress about his significance to the restaurant, she replied, "He ate here once." So, expect to see the "Karen S. Taco Platter" on the menu soon.

My first statement: I couldn't believe how moist the chicken was! Okay, now to the real review. We arrived on a crazy busy Thursday night and waited about 30 minutes for a table, however the tasty margarita from the bar made the wait not seem too long. Being with three people who were actually from Santa Fe, I followed their lead and ordered Chicken Enchiladas one w/ red chile and one w/ green (Christmas style, I guess?). I'm a huge chile fan too so I was definitely excited. First to come out, the sopaipillas. Wow, so yummy with just a touch of honey! My bf practically stuffed one in my mouth cause he was so excited to see me try once since I hadn't before. Then out came the enchiladas. They were also really good! I have to say though, I did favor the red over the green chile. The chicken was so moist too! Those were the stand out parts of the dish. The rice was kind of dry and 'blah' and nothing new about the plain beans. While some people enjoy a ton of cheese, I like to be able to taste the rest of the meal too- so would have liked a little less but nothing I was too worried about. Our service was okay, nothing great and nothing bad. I think it's a great place for a good meal, but nothing I would get over the moon excited about!

  • Cloudy C.

Very generic food, a tourist trap for sure. Spanish rice-bland. Beans - blah. Beef taco, tasted like it was mixed with a packet from the grocery store. Blue corn chicken enchilada - BLAND. Chile relleno - greasy. The house margaritas were full of ice and very weak. The only good thing here are the green chile and red chile sauces which are outstanding. Not worth the bother. Oh yes on top of the bland food the staff looks bored and fed up with working there.

During our short visit this was our second dinner restaurant we went to - this was much better than the place we went to on our first night. Food was good and a bit spicey but we learned that the mexican restaurants in Santa Fe traditionally make their chile/salsa SPICEY. They even put a warning on the menu! Service was good and they had no problem accommodating us with separate checks (6)!

    (4)

Food was fresh. Service prompt. Priced reasonably.

Ok, so I don't live in the Southwest, but I've spent my fair share of time there. By and large I love the cuisine. Roasted chiles, fresh ingredients, killer tequilla selections, and lots of spice. What's not to love? I'll tell you what's not to love, the service at this joint. After ordering $80 worth of liquor in a place where margs (I'll get to those in a second) are about $6-8 our waitress was still in a foul-ass mood with us, mind you for no aparent reason. We were not drunk, and all of us have worked, or do work in the food and bev industry. We all know what it's like to be in her shoes, which makes her behavior even that much less forgivable. **side note on Tomasita's margs**: Top shelf tequila, cointreau, and then Jose Cuervo marg mix??!! Are you kidding me?!?! I mean, seriously, you're not using fresh mix? They taste fine, but would've been way better if they didn't F it all up with trash-ass mix. After our dinner came out, which, had a few mistakes, nothing major, we tried to order another pitcher of margs. No dice. She was MIA for 20 mins. We finally flagged down another server, ordered our drinks, and before we were even half done this (insert your fav explative here) walks over and litterally throws the check on the table and walks away. To add insult to injury she auto-gratted us. Not the best to say the least, but if you're looking for B- New Mexican food on a Friday night in Santa Fe, this might be your spot.

This is my second time going to Tomasita's...unfortunate I don't return. A friend came to visit from Mexico, he wanted to take the RailRunner to Santa Fe from Albuquerque. We decided to have lunch at Tomasita's. He had the vegetarian sofapilla and I had a cheese enchilada with red chile. Afterwards, we walked along the plaza and went to the museum. He said that he had a tummy ache..and later, after returning to Albuquerque, so did I. The food was ok, nothing special, fresh sofapillas, but not a place I will eat at again.

  • Rachel C.

I've been eating in Tomasita's longer than most of you have been alive and the best I can say about it is that it is the same as it always has been - consistently great!!! If you are a fan of real Santa Fe food, this is the place that will never disappoint you. If you are looking for Tex-Mex, or even the "Q" Mexican food . . . forget it. You won't find them here. But if you are looking for real authentic, served with great green or red, this is you place. It is one of my very all time favorite places to eat. Always will be. And it is in the old Santa Fe train station, so green comes with history. Only reason I wouldn't go here is because it is too crowded. I'm not the only one who thinks this place is the "bee's knees!"

Great chile relleno. Big chunks in the green chile sauce.

  • Alison F.

The first place I visit every time I go to Santa Fe. A warning: the chile is always hot. There's no such thing as mild chile here. But they do have dishes without chile. At Tomasita's I always go with the green chile -- it's better than their red. Back when I drank, I liked the margueritas. The sopapillas are amazing -- they come with butter and honey but don't really need either. There tends to be a very long wait in the evenings, but they have little beepers you can carry around with you -- go check out the railyard. It's worth the wait. Not sure what's up with the negative reviews -- but it's also true I've been going here since the 1970s, and I'm so loyal by this point I may be missing something. Still, I love it. Give it at least one chance and judge for yourself (but remember: GREEN chile, not red).

  • Mark M.

I give this 2 stars because the food was good. We detoured to Santa Fe on our vacation on the recommendation of a friend. It took us about an hour out of our way. The food was good but the service was among the worst I've experienced. They couldn't even get our water request right. The waitress was aloof and disinterested to the point of being rude. And the person that brought the drinks was just plain rude. I don't like having to go looking for the waitress to pay my check and I had to do that. I will not go back and will not recommend.

Tomasita's was recommended to us by the lady at the visitor's office in The Plaza. She said she's been there for 14+ years and Tomasita's has been a local's favorites, of course we gladly took her advice. The line was long around 6:30pm on a Saturday, we had a 45mins wait, but at least we had a pager. Since there was a spiciness disclaimer for out-of-towners, we asked to sample the green and red chile first, waited and waited for the SUPER HOT aftereffect, nothing ever hit us. It wasn't spicy at all!!!!! And I am not even someone who can normally handle spiciness ! We had the special Saturday carnita and the Mexican Steak. The carnita was tender and flavorful, however my medium rare steak was dry and chewy... sopapillas was tasty, especially with the honey butter :) The price is very reasonable for Santa Fe and the portion is big as the usual NM standard, but it won't WOW your palate!

    (3)
  • Colleen W.

The highlight of this place: the great sopapillas with honey butter that come with your meal. I still dream about them since I left Santa Fe. The rest of the meal wasn't as memorable. My entire plate was drenched in bland chile and cheese. Some people may like this, but to me, it made it hard to distinguish the items I chose to sample. It feels like a chain, although it comes very highly recommended by the locals.

Heard about this place but decided to check it out, and I must say the food was extremely good. We had chips & guac and then had our main dishes and was impressed. We did order dessert as well, and the flan and natilla was incredible. I will definitely make the drive or take the runner there again.

A-w-f-u-l. I ordered chicken tacos and out came "cripsy" taco shells from a bag, chicken from a can, iceburg lettuce, and diced tomato, served with beans (also probably from a can), and rice that was undercooked. My girlfriend came to the same conclusion with her food. Really, terrible.

    (1)
  • Clare M.

Tourist trap. Inconsistent in what ever they decide to charge for your mediocre food. It's makes you feel like cattle being processed trying to eat there. Go to La Choza, Shed, Allsups even rather than Tomasitas. The place sucks and unfortunately won't go away any time soon.

    (1)
  • Matt H.

Tomasitas has great food. Unfortunately, everyone seems to know that. I have removed one star for the crowdedness of the place (though the staff knows how to handle it) and another because my stuffed sopapilla was more of a drowned sopapilla. I can definitely recommend their green and red chilis, the tastiness of their sopapillas and the coldness of their margaritas. The prices were very reasonable - especially for such a cool location.

We were in Santa Fe with our two dogs, and they can't be left alone in a hotel room (they will eat everything), so we needed a place that would allow us to take-out. We were both really looking forward to some spicy, New Mexican food, and that is what we got. Our expectations were not too high - we were just hungry and wanted something quick - but I must say, we were pleasantly surprised! The food was very spicy - which is a plus in our books! The green chile and posole was delicious, along with the enchilada. Also, the sopapillas that come with your meal were a nice extra. The food is not gourmet, but it is definitely tasty, and the price is right! We tried another restaurant the next night, but I must say, we wished we had just eaten at Tomasita's again! :)

We stayed at the Hotel Santa Fe for a conference and had a chance to eat at a number of local places in town. By far the best place we ate at was Tomasitos. We were in a group of four and tried a variety of entrees. My personal favorite was the roast beef burrito in green chile sauce. I tried it "Christmas" (both green and red chile sauce) the second time I went, but the green chile sauce was the better option. The green sauce was flavorful and had just the right amount of heat. Definitely worth the visit.

I always meet the most interesting people at the bar here. It is a bit pricey but works out in the end. Try the swirl margarita it is sangria swirled frozen marg and it rocks!

Just okay! Very average After reading all the reviews. Sopaipillas were not as good as others we had in town. They forgot our table as we sat in bar for awhile...annoyed! Stuffed Chicken sopaipilla was very bland. Salsa was spicey tho

I will call this one a tourist trap, sorry guys, but all my girlfriends are Mexican and they agree, plus their menudo is colorless and worse has no flavor. I did give them the benefit of the doubt by going twice, and nope hated it the second time. Their sopapillas are ok, had better at Maria's. I been told they have a happy hour with really good margaritas, nah forget it. ;( they suckered me twice!

I traveled to Santa Fe hoping to show some out-of-town guests a little local flavor. Regrettably, I gave Tomasita's another shot (not having been there for some years.) We were seeking a libation or two before boarding a train... Tomasita's, apparently, has a ridiculous policy that "you can't have a second drink until you finish your first one." However, this "policy" only seems to apply it to non-regulars. When I (very calmly and soberly) asked our server why the policy wasn't being applied to the other two tables in the bar, she curtly referred me to the manager. The (first) manager essentially blew me off... informing me that it was "the law" that a person could only have one drink. Unfortunately for her, I quoted the actual statute, which allows for two drinks per individual (I've spent two decades in the liquor biz here in New Mexico.) I then suggested that it was, perhaps, a "policy" (rather than a law) and questioned why it was being applied so selectively to our table. She walked off (seriously.) I returned to our table, confused and annoyed. Shortly, a second (male) manager appeared with an intimidating entourage of kitchen staff in tow (I'm not kidding... big guys in dirty aprons marching through the dining room.) I stood, offered my hand, and politely introduced myself to the manager (Carlos) while his "heavies" (one near 300 lbs) encircled me menacingly... arms folded. (No... I'm not joking... or exaggerating.) I, trying to remember that I was safe in a dining establishment (and not in a back alley about to get mugged) asked Carlos about "the policy" and said that I felt uncomfortable with its selective application. He explained the policy again and informed me that it was ALWAYS enforced... 100%... no exceptions! I, grinning, invited him to observe that BOTH of the adjacent tables (four tops) had more than a half-dozen active drinks on them. Back peddling, he then offered his apology (and promised to apply the policy more uniformly.) I said "no problem" and thanked him for his time. He then turned on his heels and walked off. For a second, I almost though he might snap his fingers as he turned, like a mobster calling off his "heavies" who followed him (visibly annoyed that they hadn't gotten to eject/beat me for anything.) Really?!? "The policy" isn't the point. I have never felt so utterly unwelcome or physically threatened by employees of any business! To put that in perspective, as a liquor professional, I've worked directly with over 1000 of the 1500-or-so licensed bars in New Mexico. Stunned, we still ordered another round of beers (we had time to kill while waiting to catch a train.) We asked for the bill, which was presented and paid (no comps of course, which I didn't expect.) I tipped 20% and almost set the pen down before our server swooped in on the credit card slip... whisking it into the back (presumably to show Carlos that his mob didn't need to follow us to the parking lot.) Ridiculous. Tomasita's? Don't do it. The food has always been the lowest-common-denominator of Mexican food in town (I moved to Santa Fe in 1988, so I may have some reasonable input.) The "ambiance" is fine-diner-ish at best. The staff is uniformly sub-par. Truly, do yourself a favor. Skip the wait list at Tomasita's and visit ANY of the other nearby establishments for your dining or cocktailing pleasure (Cowgirl Hall Of Fame, Zia, etc... several within 100 yards.)

Honestly, I'm not sure why the locals like Tomasita's that much. A long wait to get seated; the Mexican-style musicians were way too loud and made hearing anything else pretty much impossible if they were in your half of the restaurant; and the food was just average. Who knows, maybe I was just in a bad mood.

    (2)
  • Dave O.

Usually the wait to be seated is quite long but this time we were in our seats in about ten minutes. The wait staff was really helpful and after looking over the menu I. Got the Randy Travis plate. This consisted of two pork chops, posole, beans and green chilli. It was delicious. The place is a lot bigger than it looks so it can seat quite a few. If your in the mood for tasty New Mexican food at decent prices then come to Tomasitas.

Ugh. So. Over. Rated. I paid $10 for a plate with a mess of canned beans, box rice and greasy cheese melted on it (the veggie enchilada). No reason to go here whatsoever. Feels like Perkins.

After checking Yelp for dinner in Santa Fe, we saw some great reviews of Tomasita's and we weren't disappointed! Tomasita's was great food after a long day of skiing at Ski Santa Fe. Easy to find and open later than most places in Santa Fe, we were seated promptly and the food tasted amazing. The Chile fries were tasty (a little spicy but I have a low tolerance). I would definitely come here again!

This restaurant was recommended by the hotel where I stayed at. I must say that the food was good and very reasonably priced. I love the sopapillas that come with the meal. I had a combo plate that included taco, tamale, enchilada. That plus a house margarita came to less than $20. They sat me sooner than others because I was alone; very nice of them. I will definitely return next time I'm in town.

Tomasita's is a great place for people to eat lunch or dinner on their first visit to New Mexico. They specialize in New Mexican food, and the menu includes the most popular ones. The staff is very busy but efficient. Tomasita's food is actually typical and good. If you ask for extra chile sauce or gravy, you'll be given it. Green chile stew and posole are local favorites, prepared well at Tomasita's. The sopaipillas are a typical New Mexico dessert offering, eaten drizzled with honey. The only drawback I've experienced with Tomasita's is the popularity of the place, causing the parking lot to be full and the necessity to wait for a table. There is a bar-room, though, if you care to go in there to wait. Expect Tomasita's to become even more popular, as the new Railyard complex next door is a new tourist-draw with parking and shops. .

We came here on a reccommendation and weren't terribly impressed. The place was packed and the wait was atrocious, but while waiting in the bar area a table opened up and we were able to snag it. The service was fine, the margs were sicky sweet (I'm a marg addict and didn't even finsih mine) and the food was hit and miss. The bread and honey butter was addictive, the tamales were good and spicy, but the enchiladas were just okay. I feel like despite the hype, there's got to be better places to eat in Santa Fe.

Our waiter was really friendly and helpful. We, as tourists, have not tried a stuffed sopiapilla before and wanted to order a few meat sopiapillas with our entrees (knowing that we'll get a plain sopiapilla with our entrees). Our waiter insisted that we have already too much food - and later showed us that stuffed meat sopiapillas are just meat stuffed into a plain one! haha Instead, he gave us a dessert sopiapilla, as shown in the picture I've attached above. (ooops...I hope I don't get the waiter in trouble!) ...ummm..of course...we tipped well. :)

Delish-ous!!! I love New Mexican food and this place did not disappoint. I went with a party of six and we were seated and served promptly. I forget exactly what I got. . some sort of combination plate. . ..but it was hearty and wonderful. The usual sopapillas with honey. Yum! It's in an older building that's close to the train station. Plenty of parking and atmosphere.

This place is incredible. The food is unbeatable, the beer is cold and the prices are very reasonable, especially for Santa Fe. I love chile rellenos that are a bit crispy and these fit the bill. The chips & salsa, the sopapillas, ahhh heaven!

If you like expensive Taco Bell, you'll love this place. I have to say I've had a better meal at Taco Bell before, and that i thought was impossible to say. I'm from Southern California and I'm visiting Santa Fe for the weekend. I asked the person at the front desk of my hotel where the best Mexican food is and she recommended this place. Well, now I'm hoping I don't get sick tonight and spend my weekend throwing up. They have basically cafeteria style Mexican food. Terrible! They don't serve you chips and salsa, you have to ask for it, and the chips come from a bag. I had tacos which had pre-made taco shells, most likely Ortega or something, ground beef with taco seasoning on it. Just awful. Nobody else at my table had anything good to say about their meal. My girlfriend only ate half in fear of food poisoning. Servers / hosts were neglectful / rude. When I left 4 people were chatting at the host's spot and not one of them even say bye or thank you. If you've ever seen the tv show Kitchen Nightmares or Restaurant Impossible, I wouldn't be surprised to see this place on it next. This place needs work, lots of it! Don't waste your time, money, and possibly your health.

I heard this place was good and there was a long line out front when I got there, so I was expecting something spectacular, but I found the food quite bland. Not bad, but 'meh' at best.

    (2)
  • Sarah E.

I would rate Tomasita's about 3.5 stars. The food and service were good but not spectacular, so I am deducting about a half a point for the "chain" atmosphere. My husband and I stopped here on the way from Taos to Albuquerqye on our honeymoon a couple of years ago. The thing I remember most about Tomasita's was that they had this huge sign informing customers that their red chile sauce was HOT and that people should ask for a sample if they were in doubt. Up until a few years ago, I used to drown everything I ate in hot sauce, but my heat tolerance has decreased a bit since then. Still, I have found that in most cases, what a restaurant denotes as "hot" is not necessarily all that hot. I asked our server if the red chile was really that hot. She said, "Not to me, but apparently it is to a lot of people." I ordered a big bowl of chile with meat, beans, cheese and the red and green sauces. Not all that hot. I wonder how many people must have bitched in order to cause that sign to be posted. People are freaks. My husband had this huge plate of tamales and enchiladas. I had almost forgotten how Atlanta has the WORST Mexican food ever. What they call a "tamale" or an "enchilada" in New Mexico bears only a passing resemblance to the dishes of the same names in Atlanta. Ugh. I'm sure this is not the most authentic Mexican food in the world, but it's still a million times better than what I can get at home. Thank you, Tomasita's.

When in Santa Fe, Tomasita's is a must visit! I've been going for years and, while there are other restaurants serving good New Mexican fare, Tomasita's just does everything right. The bar area is a great place to hang while waiting for a table and, besides, everyone expects to wait and just enjoy each others company. Some might fault Tomasita's for being too well run which makes it seem somehow franchise-ish or touristy but I've never met a local who doesn't enjoy Tomasita's. Good food, friendly service and good prices make Tomasita's worth repeat visits.

Tomasita's is the heart of Santa Fe to me. Really good food with just enough local flavor and unpretentious spirit. I visit Santa Fe about once a year and always have a meal and margarita here. I love the stuffed sopapilla with green chili.

Have had good and bad experiences at Tomasita's with both the food and the service. But, have always loved the Wednesday Special (Blue Corn Chicken Enchiladas with sour cream) so went back there today and was disappointed. They have started using what appears to be mostly dark meat chicken in the enchiladas and it was in large chunks vs. shredded. It tasted old and dry. Hate it when restaurants start out good and then get greedy and start using cheap meat. Had a bad stomach ache afterwards like some of the other reviewers mentioned. Margaritas were not that good either. Didn't even finish mine. Long wait and not worth it. Won't be going back.

    (1)
  • Jon'i B.

The place has been around forever, and the food hasnt changed much in my time. i always get the wednesday special, chicken enchiladas in blue corn tortillas, the margaritas are good. its a typical new mexican family resturant, nothing fancy, but good. i grew up in the neighborhood. sometimes a long wait, but fun to people watch, lots of local families and tourists. sopapillas are just like grandma's good red and green chilie

This was the worst dinning experience I have ever had. While on vacation in NM the hotel that I was staying at recommended Tomasita's. The food and service were terrible. The food tasted like it was frozen and then heated in the microwave. The margarita was straight sugar. We were gracious and paid our bill and told the manager that this was not a good dining expericence and he suggested that since we did not enjoy it that we not come back. I THINK THAT NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO HAVE SUCH A BAD DINNING EXPERIENCE AND SHOULD NEVER GO BACK. THAT IS NO WAY TO TREAT A CUSTOMER. PEOPLE OF NM TAKE YOUR BUSINESS SOMEWHERE ELSE.

My friends and I came to Tomasita's on a Saturday night, and were surprised that the wait for 6 people was only 20 minutes. We had been warned that it could be much longer. The hostess didn't ask us where we wanted to sit, and we ended up outside, which was too cold. After shivering for 15 minutes, we asked our server if we could go inside. Within 5 minutes we were snug inside, beneath a beautiful mural that somehow makes Santa Fe look like Provence. Nice job! The food at Tomasita's is fine. There is quite a lot of variety, and my table appreciated the vegetarian tamales. I ordered the shrimp tacos, which were good. I guess coming from Chicago and Pilsen, I really wanted hot tortillas brought to my table wrapped in foil, or just soft, warm tortillas period, and was surprised by the crunchy kind. This would have bothered me more if I had ordered carne asada or something...but I'm not sure if the more exotic Mexican tacos are on the menu. I was not happy with the posole that accompanied my 3 tacos. I am a huge fan of posole, and this hominy was waxy and on the tasteless side. My friends really liked the rice which they chose as their side though. We did not order any drinks, as we were going straight to the Cowgirl after dinner for drinking and dancing. I also was recovering from a double ear infection and throat infection, so I drank hot tea. I must say, the tea tray that I received was up there with country club tea service, and the waitress was great about bringing me more hot water. The ever present honey on the tables for the sopapillas felt good on my throat too.

This is one of my favorite places in Santa Fe. As always the food was great and my server was awsome. It was coming to the close of happy hour and the place was packed. My friend and I ate in the bar area and order our meals and 2 bar drinks. I asked for chips and salsa and our server told us that we could get free chips and salsa at the bar the bartender would help us. So I went over there and he said it was to close to the end of happy hour to help us and get everything out again so no chips and salsa for us. I told the server this and told him we still want the chips and salsa and to just charge us for it, not only did he get it to us in a reasonable time but he didn't charge us. That was to cool. When he served us our bar drinks he offered us water before the meal came out and I'm so glad he did because the chile was so damn hot, perfect but hot. Next time I'm in Santa Fe, I will make it a point to come out here and eat and tell whoever is coming to Santa Fe to stop and make sure they eat here.

I am from California and wanted to try a south western restaurant in Santa Fe. It was a happening place but we got seated in about 15 minutes. Coming from Los Angeles, this is not a big wait at all. I was really happy with the two tamale and enchilada plate I got. It wasn't greasy or overly heavy. The sopapillas were good as well. My meal was about 9.95 (very reasonable) for the environment and quality of food. I gave the place 4 stars due to the margarita glass and serving we got for the $21 dollar price. The glasses were really tiny and the glass container had too much ice. It probably came out to only two full regular margarita drinks.

    (4)
  • Rez B.

Don't understand the hype or why we waited an hour (usual wait according to everyone we talked to). Margaritas were pretty good, but the food was so bland. Chicken burrito was tasteless, and tacos were most ordinary, sub Taco Bell tasting pockets. The other stuff was pretty forgettable. I mean, we were in Santa Fe... New Mexico. Oh, the "best dish" we had was the green chilli french fries. Saying that is just sad.

I went to Tomasita's on the recommendation of a local and, like many a reviewer here, was blown away. While in the lobby trying to decide between tamales and enchiladas and carne adovada, I strike up a conversation with a man who seemed to be a regular in order to get his recommendation. Turns out, he's Ignatio, the owner of the place. Out of pure hospitality -- since tourists can't give repeat business -- Ignatio offers to "take care of us." We weren't sure exactly what this would mean but, in one of the smarter decisions of that vacation, decided to go with it. Ignatio ended up bringing us all huge plates with a little bit of everything (with accommodations for the vegetarian among us). Each and every dish on our plate was beyond good, and the guac that we opened with and the dessert sopapilla that we ended with were worth the feeling of extreme fullness that we had at the end of our meal. Seriously, this place is delicious and you would be making a mistake not to go there.

My wife and I waited an hour on a Friday night to get a spot and the place had been recommended by a relative so with the wait time and the suggestion we figured we were going to be in for some great Mexican food. Sadly this was not the case. This has to be the most hyped Mexican food in Santa Fe. The service, was excellent, and very nice (probably kept it from the 1 star), but the food was very hit and miss. Honestly my wife and I have both experienced better flavors in chain Mexican restaurants such as Azteca. We tried a number of things and were very un-impressed. I don't know if this is the only place in Santa Fe you can bring a family for Mexican food, but I know if we are ever back in Santa Fe we won't be wasting our time by going there again.

Touristy? Sure, but there were also plenty of locals here. I thoroughly enjoyed my vast serving of beans, rice, enchiladas, and red and green chile sauces. Our server was attentive, our wait was brief, and we were well-fed and content when we left.

If you come here, be prepared to wait. It's a big restaurant, but previous posters are right when they say that it seems like everyone in town recommends this place. We came for lunch on a weekend, and it was packed. They move people in and out pretty quickly and service was very friendly and efficient. Food was good. Chile was spicy, but not worth the warning sign. Sopapillas were yummy. No real complaints about the food, but nothing wowed me.

This came as a recommendation from a coworker who grew up in Santa Fe. She never steers us wrong and this is no exception. The margarita really hit the spot after tooling around in the 90+ degrees. It was simply the best margarita we have ever had! I wish I had one right now...

  • Peter C.

Poor tourists. They ask where to go for New Mexican, some local tells them Tomasitas, and they go and wait 45 minutes to an hour for food that's barely above Taco Bell quality. There is much better NM food in Santa Fe, in the same price range, without any wait, trust me. For instance, La Choza, just a ten minute walk down the railroad tracks from Tomasitas.

This place was recommended to us by our customer that we were visiting. We went there for Lunch and it was busy. We were able to order our food pretty quickly and we got served pretty quickly as well. The food was actually pretty decent ( I ordered the vegetarian mexican plate) The green and red chilles were very well made. Didn't try their drinks or desserts. The Soapaipillas that were served with Lunch was warm, fresh and very tasty. Overall a very good lunch experience that is not very expensive.

This place is simply amazing. My best friend was raised in Santa Fe and he took me here to eat. The green here was awesome. This place kinda reminds me of a place where you could take a date, your parents, or both. I had the sangria with my dinner and while I am usually not a fan, I must admit that it was pretty tasty. Out of everywhere we ate (and we ate a lot on my Santa Fe trip...he stuffed me with green chile for breakfast, lunch, and dinner because he claimed that growing up in California I was missing out), the stuffed sopiapilla here was the best. I want it now and that sucks, because I'll never find stuffed sopiapillia in the middle of the ocean. OH and that sopiapilla with the honey butter thing was awesome too. Sometimes I wake up at night with my pillow in my mouth because I was dreaming of it's yummy-ness. It's like he told me, this is not MEXICAN food, it's NEW MEXICAN. (OHHHH yes there is a difference)... Every time I go to Santa Fe this is the place I want to go to for dinner.

  • Valerie M.

My friend from Santa Fe loves Tomasita's so I trusted her judgement when she insisted that we eat here. The wait was ridiculous which is usually a good sign that the food is good right? Wrong! They make you pay for chips and salsa and the food is not very good. Try Maria's New Mexican kitchen instead.

Not bad! We got right in on a busy day for lunch, my husband loved the chile relleno dish, I had the tortilla soup, which was good. I did order a margarita, it was so strong, I had to let the waitress know I could not drink it. Since it came from a machine, I decided against trying for that again. Overall not a bad place to eat.

Quite possibly the worst pseudo-New Mexican food in the entire city of Santa Fe. This time I ordered a simple burrito and a margarita, and the burrito was bad. The rice that came with the burrito was watery, the service was criminally slow, the wait to get a table was 25 minutes, and the margarita was badly poured. Never again.

Fantastic Mexican food. We ate here three times (yes...three...ooopsie!) on a recent trip to Santa Fe. Everything, from margaritas, to stuffed sopaipillas, to combo plates, to their daily specials (recommend the blue corn chicken enchiladas!) is fantastic. Yes, tourists go here. This is because they know that locals go here too. And why not? The food is of excellent quality, and it's inexpensive.

  • Luke O.

This place had fantastic salsa. So memorable my boss who hadn't been to Santa Fe in over 10 years specifically asked me to bring him back a jar. The chili relleno was tasty. Other than that, I'd say it was an above average dining experience. Nothing stood out about this place too terribly much. A tad pricey for what you get. However, I wouldn't mind going back and trying the stuffed sopapilla.

I wish Tomasita's would franchise and open a location in Chicago. This place had AMAZING Santa Fe fare. When we arrived Saturday evening, there was a wait. We sat at the bar and had some fabulous Santa Fe Brewing Company beer. The bartender and some local patrons gave us many nightlife ideas for the evening ahead. Once we were seated, we ordered the standard Sopapillas. You have to have New Mexican food when in New Mexico! The food was fabulous, service was good enough, and I'm sad I can't go back easily :)

Like others who've reviewed this place, Tomasita's came as a recommendation by the nice woman working at the front desk of our hotel. When we arrived midafternoon on a Saturday, our wait was about 30 minutes. The Sangria was really good, as was the food. I had the Carne Adovada and my friend had the Carnitas Antonio. The food was very good and the sopaipillas served instead of tortillas with your meal were pretty awesome. The honey has a nice spicy taste to it that compliments the sopaipillas as well. Yes, there are lots of tourists and a long wait, but there were plenty of locals there, too. Go and judge for yourself how the food was.

We had a wonderful dinner at Tomasita's last night. Bob's Green Chile Enchilada was out of this world as was my Veggie Plate. The service was good, the atmosphere festive and the margaritas rocked. The best thing about Tomasita's is that it is a true watering hole for locals at teh bar and just as welcoming to tourists. We can highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

The first time I went to Tomasitas was in 1990 after "trying" to wind surf at cochiti, heading up to Las Vegas for the weekend... ah, the days. We were wet, cold and tired. I ordered the stuffed bean sopapilla with green chile and a margarita. The stuff sopapilla melt in your mouth spicy and warm. The margarita is the best around. The desert sopapilla came with this delightful honey butter that melted in the warm sopapilla. And I haven't been able to move on. Still, 17 years later I Tomasitas is on my "must visit" list and I always order the stuffed bean sopapilla and have too many margaritas, who can say no when they are that good? The wait can be long, so go off hours. The kids don't love this place. But, it's so wonderful we don't care!

I tried Tomasita's for lunch today and they seem to have it down. There was quite a crowd waiting, thought it moved pretty quickly. Everyone seems to get in, get their food, and get out. The service too seems to encourage you to get a move on. The trays made me think that they must have these dishes sitting in a hotbox waiting to be pulled and served, which squicked me out a little. I had the tortilla soup which was really hearty with beans, chicken and pozole along with the standard tortillas; and the Mexican plate for "light" eaters. It came with pozole, green chiles, a chicken enchilada and pinto beans. It was really. . . . watery. It didn't taste bad, but it really made me think of a ready made/reheated meal. The real standout is the little sopapilla that comes out with the honey butter. Holy lord that thing was good. Also, there is a warning on the menu about their chiles being spicy, and while I didn't feel it on the palate, it certainly gave me a runny nose. Fire-phobes beware.

Wow, I can't believe some people don't like this place. As some reviewers in the past mentioned, the biggest problem people have seems to be the fact that this restaurant is "touristy". Sure, there are a lot of out-of-town customers here, but it is so funny that people who don't like tourists are actually also those who don't live in Santa Fe anyway. Having said that, the chile relleno here are just amazing, and the staff here are really nice. Also, the price was extremely reasonable.

Really good food & they have a mariachi band! Lively atmosphere and great green chilli-- it's for sale there too! Great tasting dishes that have a common twist of New Mexico on standard Mexican food. Good selection of beer and drinks too. And for the price, they have great portions.

Tomasitas is the first place I go to when I come from a trip, and the last place I go when leaving for a trip. My family and I have been going to Tomasitas too many years to count! The food is as great as the friendly staff and service. Dining alone? Come join us at the bar where you're sure to enjoy your delicious meal and meet some of our memorable, friendly locals. My regular? Roast beef burrito christmas. (Of course with an over easy egg on top.) Great restaurant on all levels. Thanks again all the gang at Tomasitas! Yummy!!

Needed to get our sopaipilla fix and this was recommended by a local. The sopaipilla came out hot and was crispy on the outside and light, airy and chewy on the inside. I slathered the honey butter on mine and devoured it. I have not had any other sopaipillas to compare these to, but I know it was delicious!

This is definitely the most happening place in Santa Fe. It was SO crowded, but we were determined to wait. The lobby was full of people waiting. We waited about 20 minutes for a nice table - it was quick. There's a little bar off to the left where you can get a drink and wait. I am not a great lover of Mexican food. But, my food was very good. I just got some tacos and left almost everything out of them - they accommodated that request. My friend had a big Mexican plate with a fired egg on top - she said it was delicious. The BEST part is these big dough puffs they bring out to you before the meal. Not sure what they are called (see my pics) - but OMG they were SO good. The place is super clean, the service was excellent, and the inside has a lot of character. I really have nothing bad to say about it, despite the fact that I don't care much for Mexican food. I have to say, I did enjoy my meal here. All good.

The atmosphere was fantastic. One of the best rustic buildings I've seen in a while. I ordered the tortilla soup was very good -especially with extra green.

Great restaurant and good vibe, seems to be a local hangout. Chips and salsa cost money? (Not the only place that does that, sorry we are from Texas where that is just a standard). I will say they brought some huge sopapillas that did not disappoint, very light and flakey. Came for the chili relleno's and they were good. They brought the bill and charged us for an extra margarita, which changed the rating from 3 1/2 to 2 stars....

We came in for chips, salsa and guacamole and a quick drink. The place was jamming, tons of people waiting for tables. Took us a few minutes to snag a place at the bar. The food was awesome and the sangria was delicious.

I left so satisfied after eating here and I can't wait to go back! Tomasita's is authentic New Mexican food and it did not disappoint. The sopapillas were amazing touch to the dinner as well. "The Swirl" margaritas were very tasty. They're iced and mixed with sangria. But don't be fooled by the colorful appearance, those things can knock you out (hence the two margarita- limit per person) the prices are just okay, it's a tad bit expensive. The special of the day will run you $14. But the service was great and I will definitely come back.

Amazing New Mexican fare. Chips and Guacamole: Guac was really good and provided some reprieve from the spice. They give a good portion as well. Sopaipillas: I had the stuffed sopaipilla with roast beef. Very good, and very filling. I also had them throw on a soft boiled egg, because soft boiled eggs are awesome. Green Chili: I ate at several notable restaurants in Santa Fe and Taos, and there's no question that Tomasita's has the best. I even got a quart to-go and brought it back to Jersey. It's got that great bitter green pepper flavor and isn't too spicy.

My second time here and every time I come to Santa Fe i will be stopping into Tomasitas. Their green chili sauce is the best.

Came for lunch, kind of a tourist trap. Famous for some reason but it was not clear to me. Had the blue corn ckn enchiladas, not what I expected quesadilla style but I was not dissapointed. Read some other reviews and saw the usual Santa Fe complaints on service. Coming from Las Vegas, NV service is and has always been a big decider on whether I'll be back. Service was fine and food was good. See no reason to bad mouth this place, I'd eat here again.

The food here is so so for me and I am very picky when it comes to new mexican food. I have yet to come here and have anything that has wowed me. ITs not bad new mexican food, its just not great. They do have excellent margarita's here so I will give them that. This place is always busy with long wait times no matter lunch or dinner so thats a down side for me. I also think they have a nice ambiance here.

Flavorful, robust red chile, fresh salad and trimmings. The table next to us thoroughly enjoyed their margaritas. We came for lunch in the summer. Tomasita's has been in Santa Fe for many, many years. The service and food quality are consistently good and the prices are a good value for Santa Fe. Highly recommend! Get here early so you don't have to wait on a table.

Yum!!!! First time here and first time trying Spanish food! Loved the complimentary sopapillas with honey butter, so good. Ordered a combo plate that had a blue corn chicken enchilada, a beef taco, and a relleno with green sauce, rice & beans. Very authentic, friendly service but it could have been a little more attentive. Had female mariachi singers while eating which was awesome. Food came fast especially for how busy the place was. Great experience and definitely recommended.

Excellent meal! Blue corn chicken enchiladas, green chile fries, super tortilla burger with green chili, and ground beef burrito grande with red sauce were awesome. We will definitely return on next visit to Santa Fe.

We visited Tomasita's for lunch as it had been recommended by a few locals in Santa Fe. The service was friendly. The atmosphere is casual. But the food was bland! We ordered the mixed enchiladas and they all tasted very bland and the chicken was not very good quality. We also ordered Tomasita's Big Bowl with chicken. The chicken in this dish tasted a little better and was overall an average quality meal, but was the worst meal we had in an entire week in Santa Fe. Next time we will be going back to Tia Sophia's or making sure we get to the Shed before it closes.

Came here as a kid, and just revisited as an adult: still stellar!! This place is a must if you're visiting Santa Fe. Sopaipillas will never taste the same anywhere else. Do it.

Wow. As a Midwesterner, Santa Fe style food is foreign to me. No longer. The drinks were awesome the server was busy but attentive and the food was out of this world. Maybe it's not for everyone but for me this was a slam dunk. If you're not familiar with This style of food it is spicy and not for the faint pallet.

We ate at Tomasita's Tuesday July 7, 2015. The servers were loudly enjoying themselves. We had to initiate ordering! My husbands burrito was not 'nuked' thoroughly. There were cold spots. My chili stew was perfect. The sopas were good, but not as good as Garcias, but then whose is??? The native Americans were selling cheap plastic liquid silver chains with who know what the 'turquoise' was. Sad that management has lost control of the wait staff and kitchen. We will not return until I hear they've returned to Miss Tomasitas standards of old.

Well it's ok maybe I'm not used to New Mex food sauce tastes like it came from a can to me, my friends didn't finish their food the only good thing that I liked was service and the tamale but I think all these New Mexican restaurants need to make a trip to California to eat real Mexican food.

Been coming here ever since I was little with every visit to Santa Fe, and the experience and food is always fantastic. The restaurant has a beautiful Hispanic atmosphere, the servers are ever so friendly, and the wait is reasonable. I always order the stuffed sopapillas that always turns out delicious.

Hey there honey! No really, the honey in this place is delicious! Food is also great! Margaritas were amazing! I really have nothing bad to say about this place other than the chili sauce did not have much flavor, they were just spicy. I had he Mexican combo and then the toffee ice cream afterward. That ice cream was amazing!!! Will definitely be back!

By the time we dined here, I thought I was over Santa Fe Mexican food. I was wrong! This place had pretty good enchiladas (with green chili, of course), but the real stars were the sopapillas and their dangerously yummy margaritas. What more could you want from Santa Fe?! Oh, and the all ladies mariachi band really kicked butt. My kids were enchanted by the music.

This place was busy which let me know it was the place to be. The parking lot had both outta state tags and lots of NM plates. They were on a wait and we were seated (table 2) within 15 minutes. The waiter barely made eye contact but service was obviously a group effort so we got food & drinks on time from various staff. (Their communication was apparently good amongst themselves because again everything was timely) I ordered the sangria (not recommended: red wine with peach schnapps was pretty icky peachy) the Santa Fe IPA (local) was delicious. The tamales & enchiladas were nice. The portions were great compared to other places in town prices reasonable & everyone in the place seemed relaxed and enjoying the vibe of Santa Fe. THE SOPAPILLAS. Delicious fry bread. Soft pillows of yum with local honey butter. Soooooo good. Aside from the crappy sangria and impersonal service (while timely) I would go here again. And again.

If you are looking for authentic New Mexican food, you will find it at Tomasita's. I always recommend it to people who are visiting from out of town and looking to experience authentic local flavor. The atmosphere is nice and the service is good. My only issue is that it is a little overpriced, hence 4 instead of 5 stars.

This was my first time here at Tomasita's and it had a pretty good atmosphere. I got the Tomasita's big bowl. I like hot so I was advised to get the green chile over the red because the green is "Hotter". I tried it and the bowl was really good, quite small though. The green chile had a kick to it, but it's kind of like that fake hot. Green Chile: "Ha! I got ya, made you think I was hot for about 5 seconds but im not really that hot!" Anywho, the service was great up until it got packed. We sat for a good 20 minutes waiting for our waiter to come get our check. When we got our bill and went up to the front to pay, we waited an extra 5-7 minutes. There was actually a line that formed behind me because other people were leaving too. The food was good, not great. I'd recommend this place if you were craving for some mexican dishes.

Love this place!! Great selection of New Mexican food with a little something for everyone. They serve soapapillas with honeybutter and honey for everyone everyone at the table. Service is fast and great. The red chile is HOT!

I've been to Tomasita's several times. It is always a placed that is raved about, and I've always thought it was pretty good, but a little overrated. They have daily specials, and I recommend trying the blue corn enchiladas. The sangria swirl margarita is a must have! They have a limit of 2, because they are quite potent and they go down so easy! They are usually pretty busy, but are very quick with their service and food, so you don't usually have a long wait. Make sure to try a sopapilla..delicious!!

    (4)
  • Marshal R.

I'll make this one short. Service was good and friendly. Stayed on top of everything. Food was kind of a let down. Somewhat soggy and lacked much character. But! Their margarita was really good and you could taste the alcohol. But it was also small and kind of expensive for what you get.

    (3)
  • Jessica L.

This place was amazing! It was well worth the 45 minute wait. We started with the green chile cheese fries with white cheese. OMG good!! Then the blue corn chicken enchilada and Randy Travis plate (green chile smothered pork chops) with sopapillas and the most amazing honey I've ever had.

  • Vincent H.

I ate here during lunch and to be honest it was not the impressive. Im not sure what's the hype is all about? This is not my first time eating here, we have this restaurant cater for work about once a week and I rarely eat their food. I mean given that the service was good and the people were friendly and helpful, i thought that the food could had been better.

Great Mexican (oops!) South Western food. Really this is great food at a reasonable price in a good atmosphere. Next to the train depot.

  • Jeremy S.

Yogi Berra once said, "Nobody goes there anymore because it's too crowded!" However Tom Waits once countered, "If it's worth the going, it's worth the ride!" I once said, "If you'd just make your chile a little hotter you'd have my eternal devotion." There's this conspiracy theory in Santa Fe that restaurants intentionally provide mild chile so tourists can handle it. Well I know better than to spread nonsense! There are certain breeds of chile that have different heats and flavors and you shall pick the chile with the best flavor. If it happens to be hot that year, then you are lucky... Tomasita's is the main restaurant in Santa Fe. I don't usually eat here. But I remember when it was just a caboose, a CABOOSE! Like the car on the back of a train! Then they built addition after addition until finally, they ditched the caboose! Ha ha! Take the train from Albuquerque, and eat here. Get a combo plate with chicken enchiladas and a house margarita. Then you will understand. You will then be able to judge other restaurants in Santa Fe as better or worse than Tomasita's, our baseline, our fundamental.

This place was recommended by the locals and clearly they all eat here. It is busy at all hours of the day. The restaurant is huge so the wait goes fast. The decor is traditional hacienda style, not fancy but authentic, so we enjoyed that. The service was good, although the bar was so backed up our drinks came at about the same time as our meals. As for the food: salsa was excellent and very spicy. The sopapillas that came with every meal were wonderful, especially with the honey butter. Probably the best I've ever had. The rest of the food was decent, but not as good as some of the other New Mexican dishes we have had while in Santa Fe. Pretty generic. Green chile sauce was good but for some reason most of our group had upset stomachs afterward (it may have been overindulgence of that spicy salsa).

  • Tania x.

Loved it! The bartenders are total pros, anticipating my needs even while being really busy. The food was delicious and ridiculously generous. By far my favourite sopapilla. They have a large parking lot that surrounds the restaurant but it is a popular place so anticiapate a wait if you're a large party of people.

  • Barb C.

Very enjoyable and very friendly staff! We had a short wait on a Wednesday night and were seated in the bar area which was fine. The kids loved the sopapillas! It's typical New Mexican fare . I had the blue corn enchiladas, two people tried the chalupas, even the simple grilled chicken strips were nicely spiced. I ate here 15 years ago and the area has really been cleaned up.

Our server was great. I ordered the Tuesday deluxe special. It came with a beef taco, a Chile relleno, a blue corn chicken enchilada, rice, and beans. -the taco was dry. I didn't even finish it -the Chile relleno was greasy and pretty gross. -the blue corn enchilada was the best thing on that plate! It was actually super good! -the rice was decent -the beans were flavorless Complimentary sopapillas with honey were also served and those were extremely delicious.

After reading about Tomasita's in the New York Times, I was beyond excited to give it a try. The margaritas are amazing, and the Sangria Margarita was one of the best margaritas I've had. The food was another story. I ordered the combination plate consisting of a chicken taco, cheese enchilada, green chille, beans and rice. The taco was one of the saddest things I've ever eaten! The shell tasted old and store bought, and the chicken was so incredibly bland no amount of salsa could save it. Why would you cook a chicken taco without seasoning? Gross. The sopapilla that came with the meal was delicious and tasted even better when covered the honey butter. The service and everything here were great, but I really can't get past the gross, bland chicken in the taco.

Summary: After eating all around the great south west, I can tell you this place in magical. Ordered two very distinct dishes and they were tasteless. There are better restaurants out there, we couldn't even finish the left overs when we got home. Long Version: What is the difference between plain tofu and actual authentic Mexican food? Your answer should be equivalent to a comparison between an ant and an elephant. Tomasita's was a huge disappointment, the only thing with flavor were the free sopapillas with agave honey. We ordered two very distinct dishes because my fiancee and I share plates. One with red chili and one with green chili. After tasting both while sipping water they both tasted the same, nothing. My question is why but most importantly how. If anyone who reads this wonders the same question is probably because you know very well that Mexican food is a mix of flavors, of spices, and of soul. Perhaps the popularity and low prices have made this place forget it's roots, perhaps it was good back in the day but today, it was not. We couldn't finish the food and took some home, hoping the Aztec gods would somehow make the food edible, but we couldn't even give it to our dog. Sorry, one of the worst places for Mexican food in New Mexico. We are not recommending it to anyone who has taste.

  • Jan C.

Over all this place is good especially the drinks they will kick your butt. I do feel the proportions could be a little bigger on the food side. I also think they could give out free chips and salsa since people sit for hours waiting for tables. I think the price they charge for chips and salsa is high and not enough value for the price. I do always come back though especially for the drinks. Hope you will read this and maybe make a few adjusts for the price per value here. Most of the staff is friendly only had one rude waiter and have not seen him since. So maybe the word got around.

I've had a lot of Mexican food over my lifetime. Having grown up in Southern California and spending many, many trips all over Mexico and Central America I feel I have a handle on different types of Mexican food; from regional varieties to Mexican American and this place falls at the very end of the spectrum. Bagged chips, canned Salsa (watery and flavorless). I got my favorite go to meal, cheese enchiladas and I think they substituted the red enchilada sauce for the cheese. It looks like they put all the cheese they were supposed to put inside the enchilada on top of the gallons of red enchilada sauce. If you like lots of red enchilada sauce with a kick, this is your place! Already talked about the Chips and Salsa, not much to say there. Not homemade chips, not homemade salsa. Not even sure what type of Salsa it was supposed to be. It wasn't pico de gallo, it sure as heck wasn't picante, though that might be what they were shooting for. As for the sides that came with the enchiladas, well, the beans that came with the meal were runny and cold. The rice would of been the best part of the meal, I believe, if it hadn't of been drowned under a gallon of red enchilada sauce! So I am not sure what's up with the reviews, maybe I had a bad night? But it seems to me that they could do a lot of improvements. Heat the beans up, strain them before you put them on the plate. Learn that enchilada sauce is supposed to be an accent to the enchiladas, not the main course! The cheese goes inside the enchiladas, not on top of the enchilada sauce only. Try making some chips, people appreciate the little stuff. At least heat the chips up, it is amazing what the little things do to enhance patrons experiences when they come to dine and for $18 bucks you would expect the little stuff like that! And a homemade salsa isn't hard to make. get some fresh vegetables, peppers and chop them up and make a salsa people can appreciate paying for! I wanted to give a higher rating, but I just couldn't. Sitting here looking at $18 worth of food that I am not going to finish, not because I am stuffed contentedly, but because I didn't order red enchilada sauce with cheese; I ordered Cheese Enchiladas with Red Sauce! Hope to see some change!

I can only speak for the delicious guacamole, salsa, chips and Swirls at Tomasita's! While visiting Santa Fe, we wanted to have a drink and a "little something" before dinner. We stopped in here and while the line for dinner was long, there were 2 seats available at the very small bar. What a great choice! The guacamole and salsa were very fresh. The swirl was the perfect combination. The guys behind the bar were very nice. When I'm back in Santa Fe, I'll go back there again!

In a nutshell... Boring, tasteless. Poorest and lowest food quality. The avocados were good. Yeah, lots,of people go there and eat there but why? Let's talk about beans.... Beans, when prepared properly will not cause gastric distress. The beans I ate yesterday were NOT prepared properly. Gas and lots of it. The rice tried to be flavor able. Corn tortilla... WTF was that. A corn tortilla should smell like CORN. Sad to say it did not smell at all. I ate 1/3 of my meal and left the rest. I question the general freshness of the food. It seems like it was made two weeks ago, frozen then before serving was placed in a microwave oven. Many restaurants do this but at the expense of flavor and texture. Sad food... Go somewhere and eat a good fresh organic meal.

Be very careful. This is one spot where all of the positive reviews are deceiving. If you're looking for authentic New Mexican cruise of quality, this is not this place. Mind you, the place was packed. We came on a Monday and had to wait for a two top. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere casual yet festive with bunches of dried chillies hung around the room. That's where the pluses end. The food is along the lines of your average fast food joint grub - Roberto's, Del Taco, El Torito - just depending on where you're from. Only one salsa - hotter than average, watery and most likely from a can or jar. The enchiladas were so greasy the tortillas were inedible. Most meals come with a side order of sopapillas w/ honey butter. They may be good, but we didn't try them as by that point we were done with the place.

This place is a staple in Santa Fe! A must go if you are visiting. A couple things: - Try both the Red and Green Chile, great flavor and a good bite! - Sopapillas are a must - NO RESERVATIONS - Awesome menu that is a reflection of New Mexican food. We did hang out in the cramped bar while waiting for a table, I had a $4.75 beer. It was Friday and the kitchen does a great job getting the food out pretty quick in accordance to our order.

We shared the chile rellenos con frijoles refritos and a dinner salad. All the food and the service were excellent! I have given 5 stars only once before, but am happy to do it again this time. The local IPA was also very good, and the prices both posted and reasonable.

I'm a New Mexican. This is the food my family has been making for years and years, and I have always thought that that this place is the best New Mexican food in Santa Fe! For sure. The food is always fast no matter how crowded they are, and it's consistently good! I've been coming here 15+ years and it's always been amazing. Best sopapillas ever hands down. Definitely recommend!!

Grab a swirl!!!! 2 was enough for me, but they're delicious!!! The sopapillas are really good, the wait was long but just the few drinks at the bar is a smart move while we were waiting for our table. The waiter was excellent, food was a bit pricey but they're huge portions!!!

We were determined to try more sopaipillas while in New Mexico and folks recommended this place. When we arrived there were tons of people waiting. Even though we were starving coming back from a hike, we wanted our last meal in town to not be at the bar here so we put our name in and hung out. It took about an hour before we were called, but what a relief to finally slide into a booth at the end of a long, fun day. This place definitely has the vibe of a chain restaurant. The insane wait, the overwhelming menu, the huge portions of bland food and the lackluster service. Our server was nice, but not very knowledgeable or efficient. We eventually found out that he is normally the bartender, but is training to be a server. As for the food, the green chile in my TOMASITA'S BIG BOWL was dry and tasteless, as were the beans, posole, ground beef and chicken thrown in. The TORTILLA SOUP was a bit better. My two friends ordered the DELUXE BLUE PLATE (a combo with a relleno served with green chile, a blue corn chicken enchilada served with red chile, a beef taco, Spanish rice and refried beans) and the VEGETARIAN COMBINATION PLATE (a combo with a rolled red chile cheese or grilled vegetable enchilada, bean taco, Spanish rice, pinto beans and red and green chile). We all picked at our food, but didn't eat much. All entrees and specials here include a SOPAIPILLA, honey butter and New Mexico honey. The sopaipilla was not nearly as good as the ones we had at Rancho De Chimayo Restaurante. I think the only thing that was good here were the GREEN CHILE CHEESE FRIES. The green chile was actually really flavorful and it came out nice and hot. So that is the reason I threw in an extra star. Come for this and some drinks and then eat lunch or dinner elsewhere.

This restaurant is just ok. The tacos were good. The chili releno was over cooked. The chicken enchilada was dry and tough. We ordered a liter of ritas, which was good, but they gave us a friut cocktail glass to drink them out of. When we asked fora a bigger salted glass to drink them out of they brought us the same glass. We bothed laughed and said welcome to the land of disney. Goofy to be exact

We came here because the hotel concierge recommended this place to us. What a mistake to listen to him. The place was packed when we arrived. We waited about 20 minutes before we were seated. Then we waited, and waited, and waited some more for our waiter to show up to take our orders. We waited almost 10 minutes before he showed up. During our 10 minute wait, I had thoughts of leaving and going somewhere else. Right before I got up to leave, the waiter shows up. The wife ordered the ground beef enchilada. The daughter ordered the cheese enchilada. I ordered the Randy Travis pork chops and a chair for us to put our stuff on. The waiter told us that he could bring us our food, but he told us that another chair was not possible. He didn't even try, and disappeared until it was time for us to get the bill. Meanwhile, our food came out. Another waiter came over and asked us if everything was okay. We asked for another chair. He immediately brought it out for us. The food? The ground beef enchilada was okay. The sauce was good. My wife finished it. But, she commented that she has had better. The daughter? She finished her cheese enchilada. She must've liked it. My pork chop? It was dry because the chef overcooked it. Not very good. The whole experience was bad. If we had another waiter, i would think about coming here again. I would leave if we got the same waiter.

This is the best Mexican food I had in Santa Fe. Period. The food was hot and fresh, the selection was good, the staff was very friendly, and the drinks were great. Great portions! The prices were reasonable, and much cheaper than down on the plaza. Great value! The wait. Lordy the wait. Dinner on a Friday night has a minimum of an hour wait after 7 PM. If you want to wait and come after 8:30 or 9 PM you can get in in about 15 or 20 minutes. The small bar does not offer much in the way of waiting either. It's worth it. This is the best Mexican that I found in town. And you're saving about 30% versus the Plaza restaurants. Just eat here.

A very small step above exceedingly generic New Mexican food. The tortilla soup was perhaps the worst ever made. The food in general, Although not so horrible on the pallet as to run to el baño, visually i was disappointed and uninspired. The greater population in Santa Fe says to come here. Yet i do not see why. Mediocre food complemented by mediocre cocktails and mediocre service leads me to recommend this establishment only to those seeking disappointment.

I had high expectations going in and the resterant was full and seemingly popular, but I was soon disappointed. The service was below average with our waiter really never checking on us. The food was so-so. I've had way better Mexican food at fast food restaurants. Prices were way too high for what you get.

My go-to place in SFe for my weekly New Mexi food. Can't go wrong with the chile relleno's, pesole, or sopapilla's here. It's super casual here and perfectly New Mexican. The bar is where we usually sit-- as there is almost always a long wait for a table, but, well worth it (just have a cold Swirl and chill awhile while waiting). The best green chile served anywhere in town!

  • Jen A.

Sopapilla with side of honey butter...I can just eat that and have a drink lol. I shared a stuffed sopapilla (roastbeef ) with my friend which i think the red ( love the creaminess of the red chili) and green chili sauce made it a smashing hit and the jalapeño poppers which was just ok in my book ( i wanted bigger jalapeño slices in it). Oh and did I mention that kick ass drink The Swirl which I jokingly underestimated? Lol try one and you will understand why there is a 2 drink limit lmao. I would definitely recommend this place to Santa Fe visitors.

Really disappointed. Red chile tasted like ketchup, green had no taste. Apple pie was too sweet. This used to be a favorite - I've eaten here since 1978. No more. One star is for service, waitresses were pleasant.

Really yum. I thought it was going to be touristy because everyone said to go....but it was really good, cute, and absolutely delicious soppapillas and honey butter. Good price, too.

A few things you won't find here - food with flavor, service, or again food with flavor. Probably the worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. The drinks are over priced as well. Don't bother.

Service was excellent, but maybe that was part of the problem. We were seated quickly and the waiter came almost immediately for drink orders and asked if we were ready to order. In the time it took him to get a beer and some water which seemed like an average amount of time, dinner was already on the table, brought by a runner. This is hardly cooked to order food. I had the daily special of blue corn chicken enchilada, which was good but could best be described as "a plate with a bunch on overlapping Mexican stuff on it." My wife's Mexican vegetarian plate looked about the same sans chicken pieces. Food was OK but I expected better for Santa Fe. On this trip had much better Mexican in Wythesville,VA, which is a least South West (for Virginia that is).

Popular family restaurant destination just south of downtown Santa Fe. Short drive from the more tourist-ed restaurants there is plenty of parking. Seems to be constantly busy and does not except reservation so expect to wait at meal times or with a bigger party. The service seemed a little intent on turnaround. The food was quickly prepared and very good. The portions were large.

The service was great. The chips and taco shells appeared to be factory made. The rice was ok like most other nm places.

I used to come here as a kid. I recently went back as adult and it was as good as I remembered. The sopapillas are fantastic, especially with honey. The margaritas are decent and the atmosphere is just want you would want out of a visit to Santa Fe - a good mix of locals (as I was when I was a kid) and tourists (as I was as an adult).

  • Erin M.

We visited here while traveling... This is just a standard mexican restaurant that is popular with families. The food was "ok." The wait was crazy the first time we tried to go; the second time there was no wait at all... So that's a little hit or miss. My partner did get a really delish margarita though; so you might consider that! I've also heard that the stuffed sopapillas are a good choice.

Great New Mexican ambiance-food was top notch and service was excellent! Try the chicken enchiladas with green chilis--

Killer chile. Order the roast beef burrito xmas. Avoid dishes served with rice and beans - no taco plate - go straight for the smothered burrito. This is the secret to enlightenment.

I like Tomasitas red and green chile, it's hotter than you'll find in many other places. I also love the honey butter that they serve with their sopapiilas. Right next to the tail runner station you can hit the bar 30 minutes before departure time, have a margarita or two, then enjoy the ride to Albuquerque.

This is what New Mexican food should taste like. Great intense flavor. I had the Carne Adovada, is was outstanding. If you like great spicy flavor, this is the place to try !

Lunch at Tomasita's consisted of one Combination Plate, a Mexican Plate, and a 1/2 liter of margaritas. The tacos on the combo plate were the stand-out, and I enjoyed everything on the Mexican plate, which included posole. The green chile was on the weak side, but it was still tasty. The sopapillas were OK and their honey cream spread is famous. I typically prefer sopapillas from other restiarantds, but that being said, Tomasita's does their just fine. The margaritas were pretty good, although tame. Service was OK. We were a bit perturbed that for a party of 5 gratuity was automatically calculated in. I realize Tomasita's is a tourist hotspot, but adding 18% for a table of 5 during a 2:30 lunch was a bit much. Overall, this is a good place for lunch.

Just a short walk from the Rail Runner train station in Santa Fe. Service was great, the waiters were friendly and the food was out very quickly for such a busy location. Great selection of New Mexican food to choose from and of course lots of green and red chile to be added to your dish of choice. I had the Tortilla Burger smothered in cheese and green chile. Delicious!

Used to like this place but on my more recent visits the service has been terrible. Not the best food in Santa Fe either. On a recent visit, I ordered a margarita-my husband had forgotten his id and our meal was ruined because we were literally watched the whole time 'just in case' he tried to take a sip of my drink. Very uncomfortable. Won't be coming back. I recommend La Choza for a much better experience. Or anywhere else, really.

We were told this place had great Southwestern (not Mexican) fare. It was OK, not great, and not particularly Southwestern as far as we could tell. By the train station.

Spectaular! My husband and I went in late Saturday evening. The place was still super busy but luckily we nabbed the last two seats at the bar. The bar tender was friendly and quick to greet us. We had a local Santa Fe pale ale and ordered fried mushroom caps as a starter. This is one of our favorite appetizers and it did not disappoint. I have never had crunchier fried anything. We wanted to try a few local places while we were in town so we shared a order of bean chalupas. I'm from California so I expected something slightly different but it was phenomenal! I have never been so satisfied by beans in a crunchy shell. Our meal also came with a sopapillas and honey butter. I can not explain how delicious this was. The sopapillas was super fluffy & the butter was perfectly sweetened!! This would be one of my favorite places if I lived in the area!!!

    (5)
  • Elise O.

I have no idea why the line is out the door to this place. It was TERRIBLE. The chicken in my enchilada was boiled (no flavor), the corn tortilla was completely dry, and the chili sauces had no flavor (just spicy). The pork was probably not pork, the rice was dry, the chips were broken, it was terrible.

Two words: honey butter. Sure, Tomasita's makes some excellent sopapillas and the couple dishes I have tried were nothing to sneeze at (okay, that's an understatement--more on that later). But what really sets Tomasita's apart is their honey butter. Tomasita's makes the best sopapillas you can find but they go one step further, essentially raising the awesomeness of the sopapillas a power of 10 by serving them with something as simply as honey butter. Do yourself a favor and order an extra basket. Whoa... looks like I might have gotten a little carried away there (but it's totally understandable). Tomasita's also has some excellent noms. My experience with New Mexican food is somewhat limited (I was only in the state for a weekend) but I made sure to get in as much of the local cuisine as possible. The spice is just right. The flavor is there. I went for the stuffed sopapilla which is savory, spicy, and pillows. And, if you're wondering, my opinion as an outsider is green. Green all the way. The red, while good, generally has a bitterness.

Oh my God! Amazing food and best Margerita .. Ever! Great service too. Loved our waiter. First time in Santa Fe, got a recommendation to go to Tomasita's, known for their red chile and margarita. Told to get the " swirl " or " frog " Margarita. I ordered the swirl margarita. A blended margarita with a shot of Sangria.. The best! So strong, only 2 are allowed per person at a table. I ordered the red chile enchilada ( I am salivating as I write this ) Order came with rice and beans and Sopapillas w/ honey butter. I actually used them as my tortilla. We went to Tomasita's everyday we were in Santa Fe except the last night, we went to Maria's for Mexican food ( Robert Redford's favorite Santa Fe restaurant ). Will write about it.

  • Aaron L.

Very lack luster food. I has several items, in a combo, and nothing had much flavor. The green chili did but it was just a very basic chili sauce. This is the place you go when you want one step above fast food.

  • Esteban R.

I've been coming here since I was a kid (I'm almost 40). Let me just say this, the food is pretty good but since the Roadrunner ( commuter train ) was put in the quality has gone downhill. Anyway, it's not bad, it's just not as good as it used to be. Oh and you'll probably get the squirts if you eat here ... so there's that.

  • Ceep E.

Great atmosphere and prompt service. We had 2 x frogs at the reccomendation of a local and the drinks did not disappoint. I had the deluxe blue plate which had bits of everything... It was okay. I found the chicken might have been microwaved or boiled and tasted a bit dry and bland. All in all, I would go again, but I don't think it is good value for money here.

Outstanding! After trying several Mexican restaurants around Santa Fe, Tomasitas takes it. I sat at the bar and was greeted the friendly bartender. I ordered the frozen margaritas called the Swirl (mixed with Sangria). I had the regular cheese enchiladas plate. The Red Sauce was amazing. And they give a large portion of food. I finished it off with a a of Don Julio tequila and called it a wrap. So here I am sitting at the bar of Tomasitas again writing this review. Going to try the green chilli that I have heard so much about.

Another trip through Santa Fe and another fabulous meal at Tomisita's. I splurged and had the Mexican Steak Plate which came with a perfectly cooked steak, a cheese enchilada and a yummy chili relleno plus rice and Chico and beans (corn and beans). Hubby had the combo and again, great food and plenty of it.

We got here just before the mad rush. Had about a 20 minute wait but considering the steady stream of people coming in after us we made it just in time. Had the sangria swirled margarita while we waited. I'm not much of a drinker so, to me, it was pretty potent. Had the guacamole and chips to begin with--fresh and tasty. I ordered the tamale combo and subbed the rice for posole. The red chile had just the perfect amount of heat and there was enough flavor in the meal I had no need to salt anything. The sopapillas were light and fluffy and a perfect complement to the meal. Friendly, fast and fresh. Just wish I could've tried the green chile!

    (4)
  • Ronald W.

Delicious! The great chile debate plays out beautifully on the dishes at Tomasita's. You seriously can't go wrong with any dish at this place. And the sopapilla with honey butter is to die for! You'll want to order extra. Go early or be prepared to wait!

I love Tomasita's and have to stop in here every time I visit Santa Fe. I you like real Santa Fe green chili this is a great place to eat. They pour it on heavy and there is lots of chili in it. I would dock them a star for it not being hotter but I can't, the food is too good. This is a real favorite of the locals so the place is always packed with people. The burrito grande with roast beef is always my go to plate.

A super busy place with good and friendly staff. Lots of options and happy hour deals. I'm a tourist and it was on the way back to the hotel we were staying. I just wanted simple and fairly quick. Shrimp cocktails, mushrooms, and fauitas for the three of us to share along with a tasty treat. For $3.50 - fried ice cream with strawberries - we couldn't even finish it. Enough for a family to share.

Some folks call this place touristy, but it really didn't feel that way to me. But then again, I was a tourist. Here's what felt right to me: kick-ass chile. I'm from Colorado and I can handle the heat, baby, and Tomasita's green chile kicked. my. butt. Loved it. Over one of their light and crispy chile rellenos, that sauce was perfection. And the red chile ain't too bad, either. We ordered the daily special which was a blue-corn chicken enchilada with red sauce, a chile relleno with green, taco, rice, beans and soppapilla all for around $15. A heck of a deal for a whole lot of really good food. You know me, I'm pretty dang fussy sometimes. This plate made the back of my throat burn, in a good-burn kind of way. Thankfully, we ordered a pitcher of gold margaritas that were smooth and easy going down - definitely cut some of the heat and kept me going back for more! That chile relleno, I am still thinking about: lightly coated, cooked crisp, and covered in that green chile... Our one recommendatio to Tomasitas? Their sopapillas are so good, but they bring them out with the meal, so by the time you are finished with the main course, they are cold. Good, but cold. I don't know, I always saved my sopapillas as dessert, but maybe they are eaten as bread with the meal here. It would be nice, though, if maybe the servers would ask your preference? The sopapillas here at Tomasita's are light and fluffly and delicious, and I think they would be even better when hot, right out of the fryer. This place is going on my "must list" next time I'm in beautiful Santa Fe - it's definitely the spice of life!

I've been here twice and both experiences haven't been good. The first time I got a chicken burrito grande and the tortilla was so dry it was breaking apart and the chicken was overcooked. We saw our waiter a total of 3 times, when we were seated, when he took our order 15 minutes later and when he brought out of food. Our glasses sat there empty the entire time. The second time I got the ground beef steak medium rare and it came out medium. The ground beef had very little taste but wasn't bad with steak sauce. This time our waitress was really friendly and on top of things. Overall it's a subpar restaurant for the price and I wouldn't recommend it to friends.

My wife & I are from the Chicago area & very familiar with authentic Mexican food . We are on vacation - and stumbled on this GREAT place ! They make a distinction between Northern New Mexico & other 'Mexican' fair . They should ! Their dishes are tasty & use of green & red chillies is great ! We would make the trip to Santa Fe - just for Tomasita's food !

Great!!! A must when you visit Santa Fe. Right at the train station and within easy walk to the plaza. I had the stuffed sopapias with red chili sauce and it was great. This is a must if you visit Santa Fe.

Great margaritas, the sopapillas are fantastic, the food was authentic and unite good. The atmosphere is a bit lacking. We split a super combo plate and salad. Plenty for two. The blue corn enchiladas are nice and the taco was nicely light. We ordered a side of green chile to add to everything and that was a good choice as well. Yum

I love Tomasita's! They have some of the best NM food I've ever had and in my opinion the best green chile in Santa Fe. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is that I'm not crazy about the chips and salsa. If I have to pay for chips and salsa I don't expect to get a lot of broken chips and crumbs. The salsa is just so-so so I usually ask for green chile instead of the salsa. The other thing is the acoustics inside the building. IT'S SO LOUD!! WHAT? Other than that, it's got great food, excellent service and you should definitely try it. I recommend the burrito grande with chicken, extra green and cheese. Don't forget to get a margarita!

Located in the railyard district with easy parking, this standby is reliable for its enchiladas, burritos and rellenos. Particularly nice is to sit at the small bar during happy hour and rub elbows with the locals, munch on some snacks and a drink. Highly recommend that you try a Swirl margarita.

  • Sarah C.

Service was very slow- I hate sitting around waiting for your drinks! Especially after you are 1/2 way done with your meal. Also, our server left mid-shift and never told us, so someone else started to take care of us and had to pick up where she left off, but it was hard since it was so busy. The food was OK. I have had better Mexican food at places back home in MA. It tasted standard- nothing too unique about it. The sopaipillas with honey were pretty good at least... and the wine was amazing. I got the Ponderosa Cab. Sauv. and it was the best wine I had in NM!

  • Austin Y.

I went here based on the hotel concierge's advice and I feel that he gets a kick back for every recommendation. I got the super combo and it had a bit of everything from a taco to enchilada and tamale and after having it all I will say nothing was really great. It was all very run of the mill. The only thing that was good was the honey on the table for the sopaipillas that came with the meal. You know the restaurant is sub par when the best thing on the table was made by bees.

For awesome Mexican food in Santa Fe, Tomasita's is just what the Dr. ordered. It was packed to the gills on Christmas Eve, but my server never missed a beat; the food was top notch; ambiance outstanding; and prices were cheaper than I would expect considering the class of this restaurant. Even though the line was literally OUT THE DOOR, people spilling into the freezing New Mexico winter, I was sat almost immediately. I ordered the EVERYTHING combo. The relleno was remarkable! The red and green chile, both awesome. The blue corn tortilla chips and guac both sit well in my memory. The taco, the tamale, yes, yes. The enchilada too. Oh my goodness! I'm about to burst! Just the right amount of heat in the food (I mean picante, not caliente). The chips and salsa, solid. It was one of those meals you take a picture of, and your stomach enjoys for many hours afterwards. Unable to stuff anything more in my craw, I had to stick with Mexican coffee for desert. That was pretty solid too.

Whenever I visit Santa Fe this is my favorite restaurant to eat at. However, after my last trip I'll never come here again. My entire family was eating here to celebrate a birthday. Upon entering, my family had already been waiting and told me that the hostess (long brown hair light skin and sort of chunky) made a comment about my outfit and didn't realize my family was sitting right there. They said she looked me up and down and said "that's an interesting gettup". Mind you I was wearing a maxi dress that was pretty normal. I felt so uncomfortable by her comment I asked to speak to the manager. When I told him how uneasy I felt by her unprofessionalism he gave me a VERY weak apology and left it at that. Then he had her serve me at the table! I wasn't about to drink that water. If that wasn't enough, the manager added a $7 gratuity to my receipt! At that point I definitely didn't feel it was fair to force me to tip a waitress that was so obnoxiously rude. Girl needs to be trained on some class and professionalism and could maybe take some style tips from me. Overall, service like that lost the business of my entire family in Santa Fe and San Diego and should reconsider their management and training habits. We'll be eating at The Shed from now on. (Two stars only because the food is undoubtedly good)

The food was... Interesting and for the most part, tasteless. We've had some pretty spectacular NM food but this was disappointing.

  • Barbara R.

Probably the best meal we had while on a short stay in Santa Fe. The Chili Rellenos were excellent flavor - except: only one was filled with cheese. The other was devoid of filling and the pepper itself was an 'off' color and texture - very tough (even though fried). Means an old pepper. The flavors were outstanding. Everyone else at the table raved about their meals. We only waited about 10 minutes on a very busy afternoon. The service was pretty standard - not too slow. The waitress accommodated every request. The sapodillas were REALLY good. Would recommend AND go back there again.

I used to come here quite a bit because visitors from out of town knew about it and I reluctantly tagged along. For someone who grew up here we natives (former native in my case) draw a pretty strong line between "tourist" joints and places that the locals frequent. This is definitely tourist central. It's not terrible but you'll wait and wait and probably wait some more for pretty average New Mexican food and beverages. I think they tone down the chile so as not to frighten the gringos. Food is just a little on the bland side if you grew up with chile that makes you sweat like I did. Margaritas don't hold a candle to Maria's. I wouldn't say not to go here but I'd say you could find better more authentic New Mexican food in Santa Fe if you ask a local. Try Cafe Castro or Casa Chimayo.

We were traveling through Santa Fe and with all the great choices to choose from for some great food we chose Tomasita's. Unfortunately, this was one mistake we made on our trip. I've eaten here in the past while in NM and enjoyed it. I'm not sure if they have changed ownership. I ordered the chile relleno and enchilada...only to find it is not homemade, frozen and brought in from another source. My husband ordered tacos and they tasted like "Del Taco" tacos The shells were the thin out of the box type. There is no love in the food they make for their customers any longer, this is our opinion, of course We could have saved $20 dollars and gone to Del Taco and had the same thing. We will not be going back and have been telling our friends and family about it only to hear they are very amazed because it had always been a town favorite, I hope that management reads this and looks at going back to the old fashioned cooking meaning a taco should be done fresh to order with a cooked taco shell not a steamed or boxed one. Save your money and go to other great places in town! Too many more to choose from. I love the lady outside there selling turquoise jewelry. I always buy several pieces from her. That is the only reason I will even enter Tomasita's parking lot. We will not be going thru doors to throw money away.

Arrived at our table 530 Saturday evening. Ordered Guacamole & Jalapeño Poppers. Guac was good. Poppers had almost 0 jalapeño flavor and no visible jalapeño, a bit disappointed. When the waiter handed me my Chile Rellano Dinner and said careful it's hot. Wrong! Everyone at our tables food was warm at best. My Rellano was flavorful but was so dissapointed at the temperature. I don't send food back and have eaten here once before and it wasn't that memorable. So dissapointed in the whole experience, I love New Mexican food.

I love this place. My favorite in Santa Fe...so far. It is a very clean restaurant and the service is great. The salsa and chips have the full New Mexican flavor. The red sauce nice and rich with the right amount of heat. The green chili taste fresh and spicy. The beans look and taste like beans just off the stove. The rice is nice and fluffy. Always stopped here when passing through. Now I live here. Yay! Thanks for the consistency in food and service.

One of the real bonuses of traveling to a town on a regular basis is finding special places that you can look forward to returning to each time you visit. Once a year or so we leave Southern Colorado and drive directly to Tomasita's on our way to doing other Santa Fe things (friends, shopping, desert, opera, etc.) I became addicted to their green chile back in the early '80s, when everyone called it Tomasita's Station because it was located by the tracks in an old station house. They expanded the place 15 or so years ago and the quality never suffered. They don't take reservations and the waiting line is out the door. But service is friendly and competent, turnover is quick and the food is worth the wait. There are nightly specials but most everything is available a la carte. Prices are reasonable. Did anyone mention Tomasita's sopapillas or their green chile in other reviews?

Best food in New Mexico. Fresh ingredients. Reasonably priced. Kids meals are simple and appropriately sized. Sauces are spicy - red and green. Chili relleno is crispy and full of cheese. Blue corn enchiladas are outstanding. Tacos are full of flavor and not greasy. Staff is friendly. Add a location in ABQ?

Definitely has the feel of a chain restaurant. I was surprised to see that it was not. We came here on the recommendation from the ladies in the O'Keeffe museum gift show- said we MUST try their sopapillas and their frozen margaritas. Being as it was our first sopapilla experience in NM, we all thought they were pretty good. Not something I'd go out of my way for, but I wouldn't turn them down! The margaritas were fantastic! Go with the frozen marg for sure. Yummo.

Every time I am in town Tomasita's is my first stop! Love the food, the atmosphere, and the staff. Go on a Thursday to eat their delicious flautas- but get there early because they will sell out. I also love their red chile, tacos, carne adovada, and ground beef burritos.

It's hot. It's fresh. It's absolutely fantastic New Mexican cuisine. If you're not an enthusiast of spicy, bold food do not even think about eating here. If you're, like me, in love with bold and spicy food, this may become your Mecca.

Santa Fe is notorious for bad service and no food after 9pm. Here is where Tomasitas wins. They took our party of 8 last night at 9:50 and our waiter was friendly, efficient and went out of his way to correct things we didn't even see as a problem. One dish arrived a little later to the table, he took it off the tab! Pitcher of margaritas was decent. Guacamole very nice. All of us agreed the food was fine. We have been here all summer and may be a little over NM-style food, so that could be why there isn't a huge WOW factor on the flavour, but definitely on par with all the staples in town. Sopaipillas were great! Skip the french fries (I mean that is my own darned fault!)

Absolutely my favorite place in santa fe to eat and drink. The twist margarita is a frozen marg twisted with sangria and is simply delicious. Add in the best chile...red and green and amazing food. It is worth the wait. Beautiful location and great ambiance.

Great Southwestern food! There was about a half hour wait around 7 pm on a Thursday night. This was recommended to us by the front desk person at our hotel. The food was very good. I had the bowl which was good. My friend had the shrimp which she really enjoyed. The waiters were very sweet and friendly.

For some reason the beans tasted funny and the hot chocolate was watered down. But the tortilla soup was decent and they had live mariachis. They need to up the quality of food for visitors from Texas and California who know and appreciate excellent Mexican food. No cutting corners or skimping to save a dollar - figure out who your potential customers are. Overall a good experience.

The food and service is excellent! Mimi has been our waitress on several occasions she is awesome and made our dinning experience a five star every time. The food is excellent and the atmosphere is Wonderful. Ask for Mimi and enjoy the best authentic Mexican food in town.

Had lunch, and it was not good. We will NOT go back. The guacamole was horrible and made with "garlic salt", not real garlic, and left us with an aftertaste well into the evening. Albondigas soup was devoid of flavor, the salsa was so hot as to be inedible, the veg enchilada was bland. Maybe this place was good 20 years ago, now it's catering to tourists they most likely expect will never return. I'm a local, and it's off my list.

Great food in a very nice setting. This a favorite with the locals. Yes the chili is hot but not that hot and it has great flavor and Arab. The service is great and the food comes out fast. Avoid the peak hours or expect a wait of 20+ minutes. Very reasonable prices.

The food was good. Split 1 order of green chili cheese fries and 1 veggie enchilada with the wife. It was way to much food. Im not sure how anyone can finish the dish on their own, the portions are huge. Ordered a margarita too, split that. Overall I recommend it. Prices are very reasonable and you shouldn't have to spend more than 20 bucks to walk out with a full belly and a food coma.

Food was great (especially the green chile, salsa, and sopapias), margs were solid, and service was outstanding (Jim took great care). Worth the wait.

Tomasita's is another Santa Fe institution and they deserve credit for their staying power and ability to still, after so many years, provide a good dining experience. I will concede that the setting isn't anything remarkable, but this is generally the case at most New Mexican restaurants, and in truth, hardly matters. The fact is New Mexican food is messy and fattening and rarely will you see it served in modern and presentable way; but that's exactly how it should be. New Mexican food is food for the soul, it's comfort food and when you get a craving for this food, you're not concerned with the appearance of the restaurant, nor the service, nor the crowd; you simply want good food at a good price. Having said that, Tomasita's delivers where it matters most. Over the past 20 years of coming here, I've never been disappointed eating here. My food is always delicious, the chile is always spicy yet edible, and I leave content. I have had the enchiladas, tamales, burritos and stuffed sopaipillas here and can report that they all were tasty and filling. All of these dishes follow a similar formula, one common at most New Mexican restaurants, in which your main entree will disappear under a gallon of red or green, and then healthy (make than unhealthy, probably) amounts of cheddar, lettuce and tomatoes. The sopaipillas that accompany are always good for sopping up any stray chile, and if enough remains, are great with honey. Really, there's not much of note that I could add to a Tomasita's review that hasn't already been mentioned by others, but that's probably the biggest measure of Tomasita's quality. One can go in expecting some good New Mexican food and then not be disappointed.

Get a relleno combo plate, and a sopapilla with red chile and honey. Tourist trap, but good for a quick bite and a margarita.

The food was incredible, the margaritas were excellent, and our waitress was very friendly. Our food was our before we knew it, and our waitress was always there to refill our drinks. The prices are very reasonable, and I would recommend Tomasitas to anyone wanting good food and a relaxing night out in Santa Fe.

Maybe a touch on the "tourist" side but a great place to eat with solid food and outstanding margaritas. Very family friendly and the old train depot location is a nice touch. Coming from TX, the food is just different enough from standard tex-mex fare to make it a unique experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the heat from red chili sauce (it will clear your sinus) and will try the green next time. You should plan to get there by 6 pm or your looking at 30 minutes+. Two thumbs up--we'll come back.

This is a very touristy type of place. The food was good, just nothing great. There are other, better options in the area if you're looking for Mexican/New Mexican food (there is a difference between the two). I can find places around New England that serves more authentic Mexican food than this place - a place in the heart of Santa Fe., though don't get me wrong, it isn't bad. I would have given it 4 stars, as the food is still good, however, our waitress disappeared on us, and we were left high and dry when our drinks were out for about 15 minutes. If you're looking for authentic local food, there are better options near by. If you just want something to eat simply out of the need to eat, give it a try.

Fabulous food! We did the Tuesday blue plate special, chicken enchilada with red chile and chile relent with green chile. They warn you that the food is spicy, but it's really not. It's a busy place so call ahead or make a reservation.

Nice restaurant with a good selection of New Mexican food. The service is the only thing we had a problem with. Slow to seat, get our orders taken, and get the check. I didn't understand the reason for the slow seating, there was lots of open tables with tons of people waiting in the lobby. Perhaps they need more staff on the weekends?

Not a fan at all! This place has the worst food I've had in Santa Fe. As a matter of fact, after 8 days of eating out here, it is the ONLY place that I would not return to. We had the Blue Corn Special with a Shrimp cocktail and guacamole for appetizers. Terrible service as well, waitress didn't bring the cocktail and argues that it was even ordered. Then the bill was 41.84 put 3 $20 bills down and she said thanks, come again, never even offered to bring change???? NO way in hell was she getting that kind of a tip for that food and THAT kind of service. Take my word for it, there are WAY BETTER places.

Ok. This is it. The real deal. The locals favorite. If you want authentic northern New Mexico cuisine you have to eat here. The blue corn special is awesome and even though it says only one day for the special they will always make it for you. And the sopapillas. Ahhhhhhhh. This Is Santa Fe. Done.

On day two of cross country relocation road trip, the husband and I stopped over in Santa Fe, New Mexico for a quick visit and dinner. I've always had a majestic desert fantasy that Sante Fe would merit some biblical experience for me, but it just wasn't happening in the four hours I was there (maybe next time?), although overpriced turquoise and wealthy looking retiree tourists were. Maybe because I was right in the city center? While having an incredibly smooth and refreshing Agave Way - red grape and New Mexico green chile tequila based cocktail - at Secreto Lounge, I asked asked mixologist aka santafebarman.com for dining recs. He mentioned Tomasita's among the few trusted places inter city establishments. Naturally, when you're really, really hungry, you want a heaping bowl of guac, right? Plus, how could anyone not have blue corn tortilla chips while in NM? Done and done. The guacamole was extremely fresh and satisfying, but nothing extrodinarily special from the norm. My husband ordered the local Santa Fe Nut Brown, which surprisingly came with a lime slice. If anything, it was extremely refreshing, especially for a dark beer. We each had a puffy sopaipilla with honey butter to gnash through before our main courses arrived. It was the perfect amount of chewy warm dough, air and crispness. I would eat one everyday if I could. My husband got a combination plate with a taco, enchilada and chile relleno, the later two smothered in their signature red sauce. The sauce was aggressive, but the heavy dose of cheese (and a side of sour cream we requested) helped to balance everything. I got a stuffed sopaipilla filled with roasted vegetables. Having the choice between a mild green chile and a medium heat red chile sauce, I went red. I really enjoyed the boldness of the red chile, but it was so powerful it distracted from all the other components on the dish. I would ask for less sauce in the future, which is a first for this sauce loving girl. Overall, we had a very sound New Mexican meal. In the meantime, I'll be dreaming of fluffy sopaipillas with creamy honey butter in Pennsylvania.

Went there with friends and I ordered the blue corn chicken enchilada with green chile. I thought it was delicious. We all enjoy the food and I enjoy the fact that they also bring out sopapillas with the meal. The reason I give it 3 stars is because, we waited for about an hour for our food. We went on a Thursday night. There were people in the restaurant but but not that many. If it wasn't for the beer and margaritas we probably would've went somewhere else. Maybe it was just an off night for them. The food was delicious though.

  • Michael K.

The blue corn chips and salsa are the best. The sopapaillas and honey butter are the best. The Mexican food is average, given swimming enchiladas covered in cheap melted cheese. Same with the relleno. The location is the best. The margaritas are tiny for the price, but strong enough.

When I ask locals where they eat regularly, they say Tomasita's. I'm not surprised. It's better than it's size lets on. The place looks like it could easily be a large chain that handles families and large groups, hands out balloons to kids, and where the waiters clap and sing Happy Birthday every 5 minutes to some idiot. We were pleasantly surprised. Why? #1: It's better than most of the over-priced tourist traps around the square. #2: It's a lot cheaper than the tourist traps in Santa Fe [not a huge feat]. #3: The Chili rojo was authentic and excellent. While Tomasita's is not a small high-ambiance place, it produces above average real Southwestern flavors at low prices. There's a full bar so you can get lit in an Authentic Southwestern Way. A solid three stars.

I am born and raised in Albuquerque and in fact my family goes back many generations in Santa Fe. I moved away for many years and recently came back as a "tourist". The first place I went when I came to Santa Fe? Tomasitas. Why? It's simple and it's delicious. I know a lot of people complain it is commercial now, sold out, over hyped, not like it used to be, whatever. The service was great, the food was fantastic. We are vegetarians, so eating good chile can be trickier since it's often made with pork. Luckily Tomasitas has a vegetarian menu and we were able to enjoy the red and green chile. We both enjoyed every bite from start to finish, all the way to the sopapillas. It was perfect, I couldn't have asked for better. Overall it was a great visit. Highly recommend!

Made a quick stop in Santa Fe to check it out en route to Denver from Albuquerque. Decided to have lunch but without any recommendations (besides some last minute texting to Theo N. for Yelp recs) or directions. I drove into the city and looked for the main drag and ended up here. I walked around looking for a place to eat and finally settled on Tomasitas. Yes, it did look like a tourist trap, but after checking out the little area I was in, this seemed like the best choice among a BBQ place, an upscale Italian joint, and a few pubs. Tomasita's is situated in an old railway station of which some remnants still exist. I went during lunch and there was a crowd of people waiting a la Cheesecake Factory style (and we all know how much I LOVE Cheesecake...note extreme SARCASM here) with the little pager/lighter/buzzer/soul-sucker and all! BUT, you can eat at the bar without the wait. So, yes, there are a ton of tourists, but there are also a lot of locals as well. Almost everyone at the bar was local and they all seemed to know each other. My only question was, why was everyone at the bar getting bombed before heading off back to work? Maybe I should move to Santa Fe? The servers and bartender were super friendly. Don't think you're going to get away with your big city attitudes. You say hi to everyone that comes your way or else people will stand there and stare at you until you do. And yes, this comes from personal experience. It's actually kind of nice not having to assume that everyone who says hi to you is some kind freak. Sorry, I digress as usual. The fare here is Mexican/New Mexican. They offer your standard tamales, enchiladas, tacos, and flautas all accompanied by a red or green chile accoutrement. The food and accompaniment were decent (of El Cholo caliber for those of you LA-er's), but nothing to write home about. It was the sopapilla that knocked me out. Now how is that someone as piggish as me who loves all sorts of food has NEVER had a New Mexican sopapilla? A sopapilla is basically pressed dough that is fried up to be puffy and lightly crispy, yet somehow, the pastry is still dense. Tomasita's gives you a little honey butter concoction that goes perfectly with the sopapilla. The bartender noticed I was snarfing and actually handed me a separate bottle of honey for the delectable morsel. They have stuffed sopapillas as well! Next time I'm in New Mexico, I guess I know what I'll be having. Tomasita's is a fun place with an upbeat atmosphere that is great for groups or families. It isn't as horrible of a tourist trap that some people make it out to be (I'm fairly sensitive to tourist trap nightmares): maybe it's because I was sitting at the bar with all the town drunks or something. I would have to say that it's somewhere in between. The food is decent and the sopapillas are excellent (then again, I have nothing to compare it to). Probably not the best choice, but definitely not the worst choice for lunch in beautiful Santa Fe.

Every time we visit Santa Fe we have to stop in at least once to Tomasita's. Really everything about Tomasita's is really a 3 star review ( the food, drinks, service, location) but what really bumps this place up to a 4 star for us isn't the Randy Travis special ( yes they have a Randy Travis menu item) it is the SOPAPILLAS! The sopapillas are to die for and they come out with every meal but be warned, you may just have to ask for an extra order to go!

  • David D.

I'd give it 1 star, but some of the food is ok so I'll give it 2. This place used to be good, then it got super popular with the tourists. More business is good right? Nope. Food quality went down. There is always a huge wait behind some out of towners who think they are being "New Mexican" by eating there. Tomasitas is perfect if you are a dumb tourist who likes the atmosphere of new mexico, but if you want legit food, don't even think about it.

Yes, I was a tourist too, visiting Santa Fe for the first time. So what?! :0) I loved this place! We got there at a slow time, so no crowds at all. We were seated as soon as we walked in. Our server was very attentive, and our glasses were never empty. I ordered the Combination Plate (cheese enchilada, rice, beans, posole, and a beef crunchy taco). My mom had the stuffed sopaipilla with chicken, and my dad had the Mexican plate (beef enchilada with beans and posole). Since we're of the touristy persuasion, we had our red and green chile on the side. We also started our meal with some very yum guacamole with blue corn chips. The posole was very tender and tasty, with chunks of pork here and there. The rice and beans were very tasty too, and I very much enjoyed my taco and the enchilada (can't really go too wrong with a cheese enchilada--can you?). However, I would've stolen my mom's stuffed sopaipilla if I could've wrangled it away from her--the chicken was flavorful and tender, and there was a lot of it in that giant sopaipilla. Her plate didn't come with posole, but I happily shared since she shared her chicken. Thank goodness I got the red and green chile on the side; I'm not one for spicy foods, but I really enjoyed the flavors of the chile. I think the red was my favorite. I was able to portion out the amount and level of heat from the red and green chile. The green was spicier than the red, but both were delicious. The sopaipillas that came free with our meal with honey butter and honey were a great way to end the meal. We were STUFFED and loved every minute of it. I can't wait to get back to Santa Fe.

One word...SOPAPILLAS!! They were very good with the honey butter. I am allergic to honey, but it isn't the same without the butter. I ordered the tacos w/ the green chilis...when in Rome...Food was good. Go early because the place gets packed. My co-worker took me there at 5:30P and it was already getting crowded.

we ate here for our last meal in santa fe. the place was packed for monday lunch crowd, but we found 2 seats at the bar and we were served quickly. we sat next to some locals that comes here everyday... they were all having the green chili stew with extra onions (mental note: i have to get that next time). they told us the owner of the restaurant are greek! who would have imagined greeks can make such a delicious new mexican food?? they were funny and informative and it definitely added to our dining experience. back to the food, i had the tamale plate (that came with 2 super moist (not too much corn meal) tamales and green chili topped cheese enchilada). my boyfriend had the chalupas with their fabulous salsa (which he didn't share with me - boo on him). the food was so good - we finished our plates and was hoping that the bartender would give us another round of food on our plates). the sopapillas are so fabulous - as a matter of fact, i wish i had some right now... covered in honey...mmm...

Tomasita's was the best New Mexican food I had while in New Mexico. Please take this with a grain a salt and a lime as I am by no means an expert having only eaten at 4 places in my life. This was just the most flavorful of my small sampling of 4 restaurants. The highlight is the sopapillas that come free with each meal. They are simply amazing. I had the daily special which was a combo of three items all which were all very good. The chicken was moist and the sauces were flavorful. The service here was nothing memorable. They did keep the refills coming though which is always a plus. The building is nothing to remember either but gives a Santa Fe vibe. It is however I think the former train station and has some history to it. The location is right next to the Rail Runner train station if you happen to be coming by train. It is a long walk from downtown otherwise and might be wiser to drive. Also as a heads up expect crowds and a wait.

This quote, from a few reviews back, is spot on and sums the place up perfectly: "It's nothing special. A lot of people really likes this place and I'm not sure why. The food is affordable and it's relatively close to down town, it also has brand recognition by the locals and I think that's the reason so many people go there." The place can be hideously crowded. We had two bottles of Santa Fe Brewing Company beer, one of which was definitely off. This may not be Tomasita's fault, but given their high turnover, it was surprising.

    (2)
  • Andrew S.

Tomasita's has okay food and better drinks, but a very touristy vibe. For the food I'd give three stars, because it was nothing special. On the service and drinks, maybe 4. We sat at the bar and the barstaff were very quick and helpful.

This was my first true Santa Fe chili experience...and I loved every bite of it. I don't know how we got in so quickly with a full lobby but I was very thankful for it. It got me closer to my sopapilla faster. OMG, that fluffly deep friend dough with the honey butter was AMAZING. Oh and the chili green and red, were wonderful as well.

I was in Santa Fe for the day for work, and we ate lunch here because it was nearby, and it was recommended to us. We didn't have to wait long, maybe 10-15 minutes. I thought the food was really good, especially compared to other food I have had in New Mexico. I had the blue corn enchiladas, and everything comes with fry bread (sopapilla) with honey butter. That deserves 4 stars right there. I didn't think it was a tourist trap, then again I am a tourist, so who knows!

    (4)
  • Chris B.

David D. is right on the money. This place is nothing but a huge tourist trap. The worst part is, tourists go there so they can "blend in" and get a local experience ... but, the joke is on them, 95% of the rest of people waiting in line are tourists (or just plain cattle - people that enjoy waiting in line, but are not sure why - keep chewing your cud baby!). I guess people think, wow ... if it is this crowded it must be good. The food is below average. The margaritas are good, but no margarita is worth a 2 hour wait (any night of the week).

    (1)
  • Christina H.

MMM. Tomasita's was very very tasty. Props to the fee sopapilla's that had my boyfriend drooling on our whole mini-roadtrip around New Mexico. The food came out quickly and was devoured even faster. Also, their margaritas were perfection. We actually tried to stop and eat there again on out way back through Santa Fe but it was Sunday and closed. What is it with every restaurant being closed on Sunday in Santa Fe? Religious reasons? Atheists have to eat too!!

    (4)
  • J.A. K.

The food in Santa Fe is mediocre overall, and Tomasita's reflects this. It is big, cheap, and sloppy, making locals happy when knocking back lots of alcohol. For all they tout their 'hot' chile sauces, neither red nor green were especially spicy for us touristes coming from the SF Bay Area.

    (2)
  • Andrew J.

The myth that Tomasita's is a great restaurant must be ended! Sure it might be a tasty treat when you are a tourist from the Midwest or New England. However, it takes a native new Mexican to know good new Mexican food, and as one of those, I must say, Tomasita's is awful! If there is any place to stay away from while in the lovely city of Santa Fe, It's Tomasita's. There is a plethora of amazing restaurants in Santa Fe, and Tomasita's is definitely, not one of them.

  • Priscilla R.

This place was recommend to me when I went to visit Santa Fe. The food was ok. The wait was quit long and the wait staff was not that great. For being New Mexican food, I prefer Tex-Mex any day. The Spanish rice was weird. It was watery/soupy. The enchiladas were also a bit weird. They were not rolled, they were like a quesadilla. The taste of the food had a very tomato sauce taste to it. What bothered me was that the sopapillas came at the beginning of the meal. Yes they are free, but by the time you eat them as a dessert, they are cold. Also the sopapillas are very plain. They did have butter and honey to go with it, but I am use to eating them with cinnamon covered on it. Food was alright and it satisfied the hunger. If you want to try the New Mexican food and to experience the different taste of the salsa, go ahead and try it. Do not go if you are starving, because there is always about a 30 or more wait time.

Get here early and bring a book. Semi-famous for being the local hangout, this place is always packed. A friend and I went at five o'clock the Friday after Thanksgiving and still had to wait in the lobby for half an hour. The food was good - standard Mexican (New Mexican? ....Northern New Mexican? .... .... moderately spicy? THE DISTINCTIONS ARE ARBITRARY AND CONFUSING) well done and for cheap - but I am my father's daughter. I will wait half an hour in a crowded room for many things, but not for a quesadilla.

Good, solid food with a casual ambience. Of course, the chili is a must. I preferred the green to the red, but both were good. Our waiter was concerned that the chili would be too hot for us - not really, but I guess they need to be careful. wish there were some less expensive options, but you get a good serving of food

After hearing so many good things about this place (my mom moved to Santa Fe about two years ago and people were always telling her to go here), I was really rather disappointed with the food here. Everything about the place seemed great, and seemed like it was leading up to a fantastic dinner, but alas the food was just not that good.

This is the quintessential New Mexican restaurant. A popular spot for both tourists and locals. Whenever I'm back in town (I grew up there), I always eat here at least once or twice and I'm bound to run into someone I know each visit. The food is good and consistent, the portions are big, and it's priced quite well. Other places I'd recommend that offer the same down-home style New Mexican cuisine are Diego's, Maria's, Tia Sophia's and a handful of others that I can't be bothered to remember right now. Basically anything that ends in an apostrophe 's' should be good. Oh and one more notch on Tomasita's bed-post, our likely-to-be next president ate there in the 90's and has a room named after her. Pretty snazzy.

Tourist trap, plain and simple. You'll get better NM cuisine almost anywhere else, without the painful wait. Really, I don't know who keeps sending people here. Other traps in the area (Maria's, Cowgirl, Zia Diner) are leaps and bounds better.

It's noisy and crowded, but it has excellent New Mexico food at a great price. Excellent green and red chile, and the margarita's are excellent (and killer).

What a bummer! We had heard from several people that this was a must. It turned out to be a must miss. The guac was terrible and rest of the dinner was mediocre at best. Can't comment on the drinks, but they looked tastier than the food. I realize that I am spoiled living (and eating) in San Francisco, but please do yourself a favor and skip this tourist trap.

  • Larry T.

I really love this place. It has great authentic new mexican food, good margs and good prices. I don't miss it if I'm in Santa Fe. It's unique because it is in an old Santa Fe railroad station. I took my friend from Wisconsin there and I'll never forget how he turned red and broke out in a torrential sweat while eating salsa. It was as if he had just run a 4 minute mile. He thoroughly enjoyed it though, we just asked for a towel.
